What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start with the specific game’s system requirements, then troubleshoot in small, reversible steps: close unnecessary programs, update the graphics driver, confirm the game is using the intended GPU, and lower demanding settings one at a time. The right fix depends on whether you have low frame rates, brief stutter, or long loading times—and on your particular game and PC.
First identify the problem and check the game’s requirements
“Low-end PC” can mean very different things: a slower processor, an older graphics card, limited memory, a hard drive, or a laptop running on a power-saving profile. Check the official requirements for the exact game and compare them with your computer before changing settings. Bethesda’s Skyrim Special Edition support guidance and Starfield PC troubleshooting page both begin with checking system requirements. If your PC is below the minimum, graphics adjustments may help, but they cannot guarantee acceptable performance.
Also separate three symptoms that are often lumped together as “lag”:
- Low FPS: The game looks consistently choppy, especially while moving or panning the camera.
- Stutter: The game is usually smooth but pauses or hitches briefly, sometimes while entering a new area.
- Long loading times: The game takes a long time to start, load a save, or move between areas. This is not the same as low in-game FPS.
Skyrim support lists poor framerate, long load times, and stuttering as distinct possible issues. Note which one you have before testing fixes.

-
Close unnecessary programs
Exit applications you do not need while playing, especially other games or programs doing heavy work in the background. Bethesda’s Skyrim support guidance recommends ensuring other programs are not running. Retest the game before changing anything else.
-
Update the graphics driver from the right source
Use the graphics-chip maker’s official driver channel for a desktop GPU. For a laptop, check the laptop manufacturer’s driver guidance as well; Bethesda directs Skyrim and Fallout 76 players to the GPU maker and tells laptop users to consult their laptop manufacturer. Avoid third-party “driver updater” utilities.

Make sure the game uses the intended GPU
A laptop may have both integrated graphics and a separate, more powerful GPU. Check the per-game graphics selection in the graphics driver settings and choose the intended GPU. Menu names vary by driver and Windows version. Plug in the laptop’s power adapter while gaming: Bethesda warns that power-saving behavior can switch a laptop to integrated graphics.

Lower demanding graphics settings one at a time
Change a single option, revisit the same area, and compare how the game runs and looks. Bethesda’s game-specific examples show why a universal preset is unreliable:

SaleASUS Dual GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB GDDR7 OC Edition Gaming Graphics Card- AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
- OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
- Skyrim Special Edition: Its support guidance identifies settings such as godrays, shadows, decals, screen-space reflections, SSAO, snow shader, lens flare, view distance, distant object detail, fade, resolution, and antialiasing.
- Fallout 76: Its PC troubleshooting guidance highlights actor, item, object, and grass fade, as well as texture, water, lighting, and shadow quality.
These are examples for those games, not a list guaranteed to appear in every RPG. Start with effects, shadows, or distance options that your game actually offers, and keep a note of the original value so you can undo a change.

Test resolution and visibility tradeoffs
For Skyrim, Bethesda explicitly suggests trying a lower resolution. Rendering fewer pixels can reduce the graphics workload, but the image may look softer. Lower view distance, object fade, and shadows can also make the world look different or reduce what you can see. Keep a change only if the improvement is worth its visual cost.

For stutter or unexplained performance trouble, test overlays and game files
Bethesda’s Starfield instructions suggest disabling Steam Overlay or Xbox Game Bar when performance issues occur, and verifying the game files. Treat these as troubleshooting tests, not guaranteed FPS improvements. If a step makes no difference, restore the setting before trying the next one.
-
For Starfield, check the installation drive
Bethesda says Starfield should be installed on an SSD rather than an HDD. This is game-specific storage guidance; it does not establish that an SSD will raise frame rates in every open-world RPG.

Compare changes fairly instead of chasing a preset
Use the same location and activity for each test—for example, the same save and a repeatable walk through a busy area. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what affected the result. Compare:
- Average frame rate and how consistent it feels, including brief hitches.
- Image quality and whether distant objects, shadows, or effects remain acceptable.
- Loading time separately from in-game performance.
- Whether the game appears limited by the GPU or CPU, if you can identify that from the game or system’s performance information.
- Whether the change is easy to reverse and applies only to the game you are troubleshooting.
There is no single reliable FPS-gain figure or measured settings ranking for low-end PCs across open-world RPGs. Results depend on the game, hardware, resolution, and scene, so use your own repeatable comparison rather than expecting a promised percentage.
When to consider hardware—or ask for help
Do not buy a GPU, memory, SSD, or cooling accessory based only on the phrase “low-end PC.” First establish the exact game, computer specifications, and likely bottleneck; then check compatibility before considering an upgrade. The Starfield SSD requirement is not a general recommendation to buy storage for better FPS.
If the problem continues, provide the game and version, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage type, resolution, graphics settings, and whether the main issue is low average FPS, stutter, or long loading. For unresolved Skyrim issues, Bethesda recommends contacting its support channel with a DxDiag file. That information makes it easier to distinguish a game-specific issue from a hardware or configuration limit.
