Use Conversation to raise one Mate’s loyalty and Speech to raise the whole roster’s loyalty. Then promote Mates, learn and activate useful effects, train expertise when eligible, and assign each Mate to a compatible cabin. Low loyalty can prevent a Mate from using skills and abilities, so loyalty is part of keeping a roster effective—not just a stat to improve.
Raise Mate loyalty with Conversation and Speech
The official LINE Games Mate guide gives two routine ways to restore loyalty:
- Conversation: raises one Mate’s loyalty and becomes available every four hours.
- Speech: raises loyalty for all Mates and becomes available every 24 hours.
These are cooldowns stated in the guide, updated May 24, 2023. Loyalty decreases as your fleet sails, so check the roster after long periods at sea and use whichever action is ready. Cooldowns or interface details may differ after updates; verify them in the live game.
Low loyalty is more than a roster-management nuisance. LINE Games’ Tavern guide, dated May 25, 2022, says a Mate with low loyalty or an injury cannot use skills and abilities. If a Mate’s abilities are unavailable, check both loyalty and injury status.

Develop skills, effects, and expertise
Skills and effects serve different purposes. The Basic Growth Guide describes skills as mostly active abilities and effects as mostly passive bonuses. It also distinguishes Naval Combat Skills from Duel Skills, and notes that some skills can be enhanced or granted by equipment.
Promote Mates to unlock growth
Promotion can add skills and effects, improve expertise, and increase the maximum number of effects a Mate can have applied. LINE Games’ Basic Growth Guide says all Mates can be promoted up to four times. Promote when the Mate meets the current level and material requirements, and check the promotion screen to see what the next stage will unlock.

Learn and activate effects
Mates can learn effects as they level and spend the relevant in-game resources. Learning an effect alone does not provide its benefit: assign it as an activated effect. Promotion status determines the available effect capacity, so review active-effect slots after each promotion.
Train expertise after maximum promotion
At maximum promotion, the Mate guide describes expertise training that can grant expertise points up to four times. Allocate those points to combat, adventure, or trade expertise according to the Mate’s intended job. Training uses promotion materials and books; the guide lists tasks, the palace contribution store, and the guild contribution store as book sources.

Match each Mate to the right cabin and role
Use the Mate menu’s detailed stats and the ship’s cabin screen to match expertise to the intended assignment. The official guides distinguish ship expertise, which affects the ship a Mate occupies, from fleet expertise, which affects the wider fleet.
- Ship roles: combat specialties include Artillery, Ramming, Support, and Melee.
- Fleet roles: specialties include Nature, Aesthetics, Scouting, Supply, Purchasing, Sales, Negotiation, and Trade.
Cabin compatibility matters: assigning a Mate to an incompatible cabin reduces that Mate’s expertise by 50%, according to the Mate guide. An unassigned Mate’s skills and expertise do not affect gameplay. Choose a compatible cabin rather than leaving a developed Mate idle or placing them where their expertise is cut.

Choose between specialization and stacking
For a ship-focused build, prioritize a Mate whose expertise fits the ship’s job and cabin. For a fleet-wide goal, consider Mates with relevant fleet expertise. There is also a reason to repeat a skill: the official guides say that multiple Mates with the same skill assigned to one ship increase that skill’s strength. Stack a useful skill when you want to reinforce it; otherwise, distribute Mates to cover different needs.

LINE Games’ 2026 Mate Stage 3 Transcendence update notice says Mate Transcendence expanded to Stage 3, with that stage available only to S Grade Mates at the time of the notice. Requirements and progression caps can change, so confirm a Mate’s current eligibility and material costs in-game before committing scarce items.
