Keep Energy Mode on Automatic for normal use; switch to Low Power when you need to stretch a charge, and use High Power only for supported models and demanding sustained work.
Find what is draining the battery before changing settings
Start with the Mac’s own usage and app reports. They can help distinguish a high-energy app or a recent change in use from a general need to restrict performance.
- Check battery usage history. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery and review the usage information shown there. The available options can vary by Mac and macOS version. On macOS versions before Ventura, look in System Preferences; labels and layout may differ. Apple’s MacBook Pro charging guide describes the battery usage history.
- Check Activity Monitor. Open Activity Monitor and select the Energy pane. Compare apps’ Energy Impact, a relative measure of their energy use, rather than treating it as a direct estimate of hours remaining. On Mac laptops, the 12 hr Power column averages energy use over the last 12 hours or since startup, whichever period is shorter. Apple explains the Energy pane and its measurements.
If an app stands out and you are not using it, quit it and see whether the pattern changes. A high reading is a reason to investigate, not necessarily to close an app that you need for your work.
Try small changes that preserve your workflow
Set display brightness for the room
Lower brightness as far as remains comfortable in your environment. The display is a straightforward place to reduce energy use, but there is no guaranteed runtime gain: the effect depends on the Mac, its workload, and how much you dim it. Apple’s energy-saving guidance recommends dimming the display.

Quit apps you are not using
Close apps that are consuming resources when they are not needed, especially if Activity Monitor points to them. Keep essential work open; closing everything indiscriminately can disrupt your workflow without addressing the actual drain.
Disconnect accessories that are idle
Unplug peripherals you are not using. Apple includes unused accessories among its suggested energy-saving checks. These changes are easy to reverse, and Apple does not promise a fixed number of extra hours from them.

Choose an Energy Mode for the task at hand
On macOS Ventura or later, check System Settings > Battery for Energy Mode options. Available modes depend on the Mac. On macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later, mode selection is also available in Control Center. Older macOS versions may use different labels or layouts; consult the instructions for your model and operating system. Apple lists Power Mode behavior and supported models.

| Automatic | Ordinary balanced use | Apple’s default, intended to balance energy use and performance. |
| Low Power | When you need to conserve charge, particularly away from power for a long stretch | Reduces energy use to increase battery life. The performance and runtime tradeoff depends on the task and Mac model. |
| High Power | Sustained demanding workloads, if your model supports it | Can improve performance for those workloads while using more energy. It is not available on every MacBook Pro. |
For most work, leave the mode on Automatic and address any specific source of drain first. Low Power is a useful, reversible choice when extending time away from a charger matters more than maximum performance. High Power is for supported systems and sustained workloads, not a battery-saving setting.

Check graphics behavior if your Mac has two GPUs
Automatic graphics switching applies to certain MacBook Pro models with integrated and discrete graphics; it is not a universal setting on Apple silicon MacBook Pro models. On a supported dual-graphics Mac, connecting an external display can keep the computer using its high-performance discrete GPU, which may increase energy use. If battery runtime matters more than using that display, disconnect it when it is not needed. Apple’s graphics-switching instructions explain the applicable models and behavior.

Optimized Battery Charging is about long-term battery health, not getting more runtime from the current charge. It learns your charging routine and may delay charging past 80% when it expects the Mac to remain connected to power for an extended period. That behavior is intentional; it does not mean the battery has stopped working at 80%. Options and availability vary by Mac. See Apple’s Battery settings guidance.
