This helps distinguish software slowdowns from limits that general maintenance cannot fix. There is no universal FPS gain: results depend on the PC, game, settings, and power conditions.
1. Establish a repeatable baseline
Choose a game and a scene you can reproduce, then record how it performs before changing anything. Keep the resolution, graphics preset, display mode, and power condition the same for later comparisons.
- Note the average frame rate if the game or another tool reports it.
- Also note stutters, inconsistent frame pacing, long loading, or delayed controls. A higher average FPS does not necessarily mean the game feels smoother.
- Change one setting or maintenance item at a time, replay the same scene, and compare. This is a practical way to identify what helped; it is not a promise of a particular gain.
2. Find out what is busy
When the slowdown occurs, open Task Manager and inspect CPU, memory, and disk use. Microsoft recommends checking resource use and startup apps as part of diagnosing a sluggish Windows PC (Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance).
Close only apps you do not need while playing, such as unused browser tabs or background programs. A high usage percentage by itself does not prove that a component is the cause: relate it to the game’s symptoms and check whether performance changes after closing an app.

3. Try low-risk Windows maintenance
Microsoft’s recommended checks address common sources of sluggish Windows performance. Try them individually so you can tell whether a change makes a difference.
- Install Windows updates: Check Windows Update, including optional driver updates where available.
- Free storage space: Use Storage settings or Disk Cleanup to remove temporary files. This can address limited free space, but does not guarantee higher frame rates.
- Reduce startup activity: In Task Manager, review Startup apps and disable entries you do not need to launch with Windows.
- Close unused apps: Quit programs and browser tabs you do not need during a gaming session.
- Restart when appropriate: A restart can clear a lingering software issue; test the game again under the same conditions.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 are covered by Microsoft’s general performance guidance, but Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Menu names can change with Windows updates.

4. Adjust the game and Windows graphics settings
Reduce demanding game settings gradually
If frame rate or smoothness is the problem, lower demanding graphics effects or resolution one step at a time and compare with your baseline. This trades visual detail for a potentially easier workload; whether it helps depends on the game and the PC.
Test Windows 11 optimizations for windowed games when applicable
Windows 11 includes Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft states that it applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless windowed modes. It uses a newer presentation model intended to reduce frame latency and can enable Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays. The setting does not apply universally to every game or display mode; restart the game after changing it.

Choose a high-performance GPU for a game only if the PC needs it
On a PC with more than one GPU, Windows provides per-app graphics preferences, including a high-performance option. Use it only if the system has multiple GPUs and the game is assigned to the wrong one; it is not a general-purpose setting for every PC (Microsoft’s graphics preference guidance).
5. Weigh power settings and vendor utilities
Best performance power mode
Microsoft says Best performance mode can help the CPU run at higher performance when needed, while using more power. On a laptop, that means faster battery drain and potentially more heat. It is most relevant when power is available and performance is the priority; compare results rather than assuming it will help every game or system.

NVIDIA App
NVIDIA says its NVIDIA App can update drivers and suggest in-game settings based on the PC’s GPU, CPU, and display information. Treat those suggestions as a starting point, not independent proof of a frame-rate improvement. Check performance in your own game and conditions.

If the same game still performs poorly after you have tested the relevant software and settings changes, collect the details needed for a specific diagnosis: PC model or component specifications, the game, resolution, graphics settings, power conditions, and your observations or measurements. A GPU, CPU, memory, or storage upgrade cannot be chosen responsibly from the game-performance symptom alone.

Software maintenance has limits. Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from general Windows performance steps. A hardware change is worth considering only after evidence points to a particular constraint; the cause could be the GPU, CPU, memory, storage, or something else, and the title alone does not identify it.
