To improve Final Fantasy XVI performance on Steam Deck, update the game, lower its overall Graphical Fidelity setting, and set Shadow Quality to Low or Medium. Square Enix says the latter graphics changes should improve performance, but it has not published a Steam Deck preset or a Deck-specific frame-rate benchmark. Steam’s Verified label confirms compatibility status, not a guaranteed frame rate.
Update the game first
Make sure your Steam copy is current before changing settings. Square Enix’s PC update notes record a frame-rate-drop fix in version 1.01, released September 26, 2024, and performance-oriented graphics adjustments in version 1.02, released October 17, 2024. Check the Square Enix PC update notes for the publisher’s listed changes; the notes cited here are historical and do not establish that version 1.02 is the latest update available today.
To check for an update in Steam, open your Library, select FINAL FANTASY XVI, and install any update Steam offers. Then launch the game and test the same scene or activity you found slow.
Lower the settings most directly tied to performance
Reduce Graphical Fidelity
In the game’s graphics settings, lower Graphical Fidelity from its current level. Square Enix said its version 1.02 changes to Graphical Fidelity settings were made “to improve overall game performance.” The notes do not specify a Deck-specific setting value or quantify the improvement.

- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
Set Shadow Quality to Low or Medium
Try Shadow Quality at Low first; if you prefer a higher-quality image, compare Medium. In its October 17, 2024 update notes, Square Enix said Shadow Quality was expanded to include cloud quality at Low, Medium, and High, and that choosing Low or Medium “should improve performance.” The publisher does not report how large the gain is on Steam Deck.
Change one setting at a time and compare
- Choose a repeatable scene or activity where performance dips.
- Lower either Graphical Fidelity or Shadow Quality, but not both at once.
- Replay that scene under similar conditions and note whether the result feels smoother and whether the image quality remains acceptable to you.
- Keep the change if it helps; otherwise restore it and test the other setting.
This is a practical way to identify which trade-off suits your Deck. It is not a benchmark, and results can differ by scene and device conditions. No cited source establishes a best preset for Steam Deck LCD versus OLED, or provides measured average frame rate, frame-time stability, or battery life.

What Steam Deck Verified does—and does not—tell you
Steam’s listing for FINAL FANTASY XVI currently displays the Steam Deck Verified designation. The same listing gives a general PC minimum-requirement note of “30FPS at 720p expected.” That is not a measured Steam Deck result, so it should not be read as a promise of 30 FPS on the Deck or as a recommended Deck configuration.

Square Enix’s PC update history also records that a September 10, 2024 demo update fixed a stuttering issue, with the company saying those fixes would be applied to the forthcoming release version. That announcement does not show that every stutter in the current game has been eliminated. The publisher’s August 22, 2024 demo update improved DLSS, FSR, and XeSS image quality and addressed a Dynamic Resolution issue; it also acknowledged stuttering on some PC environments and said it was investigating. These PC notes provide context, not a Steam Deck performance guarantee.
