To get more playtime from an Android gaming handheld, start by lowering screen brightness and matching the display refresh rate and game frame-rate cap to what you actually need. If that is not enough, reduce demanding graphics settings, try Battery Saver, and turn off radios you are not using. The exact controls and the benefit of each change vary by device and game.
Start with the screen and game workload
Lower screen brightness
Reducing brightness is a practical first adjustment because the display is in use throughout a gaming session. Set it to the lowest level that remains comfortable to see. Android Help also recommends automatic brightness where available, but its behavior may not suit every room or game. Android settings and menu paths vary by manufacturer and model; see Google’s Android battery-saving guidance.
Match refresh rate to the game
A higher display refresh rate can make motion look smoother, but it also increases display power use. Android Developers notes that a refresh rate above the game’s target frame rate provides no benefit to that game while using more power. If your handheld offers a refresh-rate setting, try a lower supported rate and check whether the game still feels responsive. The option is not available on every Android handheld. Set a frame-rate cap and tune graphics
When a game offers a frame-rate cap, choose a target that balances responsiveness and battery use rather than automatically selecting the highest option. Lowering demanding graphics settings can also reduce the work the device performs during play. The available settings and their effect are game- and device-specific, so compare them in a game you actually play rather than expecting a fixed runtime increase.

Android Developers reports that its FPS-throttling intervention can produce up to a 50% GPU power reduction and a 20% system power reduction. These are maximum power-reduction figures for that intervention—not battery-runtime gains, and not a prediction for a particular handheld or game. See Android’s FPS-throttling documentation.
Use Battery Saver with care
Battery Saver can limit or turn off background activity, which may help reduce power used outside the game. Depending on the device, some visual effects, features, connections, or apps may be delayed or restricted. Check whether it interferes with the game, downloads, or controller and network functions before relying on it. Android Help also lists Adaptive Battery and restricting high-use apps, but their effect during active gameplay depends on the device and app behavior.
Turn off only the connections you do not need
Disable Bluetooth only when no controller, headset, or other accessory depends on it. Keep Wi-Fi or another required connection enabled when the game or streaming service needs network access. Android Help recommends using Wi-Fi instead of mobile data where applicable; on a handheld without mobile data, that particular comparison may not apply. Connection controls and their battery impact depend on the model and how you play.

Compare changes in similar sessions
Battery results depend on the handheld, game, settings, and network conditions. To find which change helps on your device, adjust one setting at a time and compare sessions using the same game, similar brightness, the same network state, and a similar play duration. A different game or background download can make a simple before-and-after comparison misleading.

Why there is no universal runtime target
Android battery life depends on the device, and manufacturers may expose different settings or use different menu names. Google directs users to their device manufacturer for model-specific steps. Steam Deck guidance can illustrate the trade-off between refresh rate and power, but Steam Deck runs SteamOS and its controls do not establish what an Android handheld supports. Its published runtime figures should not be treated as Android handheld benchmarks.
