To make a Steam Deck or Windows gaming handheld last longer away from an outlet, start by lowering screen brightness and refresh rate, then reduce the game’s frame-rate target or graphics load if needed. On Windows, also try Energy saver or Best Power Efficiency and check which apps are using power in the background. Make one change at a time: each can trade visibility, smoothness, or performance for lower power use, and the gain depends on the device and game.
Start with the settings that are easiest to reverse
Battery use varies with the handheld, the game, display settings, selected power mode, and battery condition. There is no reliable universal estimate for how many extra minutes or hours a particular change will provide. Try adjustments in small steps and keep the balance of runtime and playability that suits you.
Lower brightness
Reduce brightness to a comfortable level rather than making the screen hard to see. Microsoft lists reducing display brightness as a way to save power on Windows devices: Microsoft’s Windows battery-saving tips.
Choose a lower refresh rate
A lower refresh rate can reduce display power use, though motion may look less smooth. Microsoft says higher refresh rates consume more power. Lenovo’s Legion Go Gen 2 guide describes 60 Hz as adequate for most situations and energy efficient; that is Lenovo’s guidance for that device, not a universal ideal: Legion Go Gen 2 User Guide.

Adjust the game’s workload
If display changes are not enough, test a lower frame-rate target, resolution, or graphics preset. These settings can reduce the work demanded during play, but the tradeoff is less smoothness or visual detail. Change one setting at a time and keep the highest image quality and frame rate you consider worth the battery use. The cited manufacturer guidance does not quantify a runtime gain for these changes.
Windows settings that can help
On Windows handhelds, open Settings > System > Power & battery. Names and availability can differ by Windows version and device.

Try an efficiency-focused power mode
Select Best Power Efficiency if it is available. Microsoft says this mode limits background activity. You can also turn on Energy saver, which dims the display and limits background processes. These changes can affect responsiveness or brightness, so assess them while playing the games you care about. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing power mode.
Reduce idle power use
Shorten the screen-off and sleep timers so the handheld does not stay active unnecessarily when you step away. These settings are most useful between play sessions rather than during active gameplay. Check background battery use
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage to look for apps consuming substantial power, particularly in the background. Where Windows offers the option, restrict background activity for apps you do not need while gaming. You can also turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when they are not needed. Check the handheld maker’s power controls
A Windows power-mode selection may not be the only control governing performance. The maker’s utility can set thermal or power behavior separately, and some software can interact with Windows settings.

Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2
Lenovo’s Legion Space provides thermal and OS power modes. Its modes differ in maximum performance, power use, and fan speed; the guide characterizes Best power efficiency as intended for battery use and Balanced as a compromise between performance and power. Check the guide for your model and software version before assuming the same options are present: Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2 User Guide.
ASUS handhelds
On ASUS devices, a feature called Power Mode Synchronization can allow Armoury Crate or another ASUS management app to change the Windows power-mode selection. If the mode appears to change on its own, check the relevant ASUS app and device documentation. The feature depends on the model and app version: ASUS support guidance on Power Mode Synchronization.

Steam Deck: lower refresh rate when appropriate
Steam’s support search excerpt says the refresh rate can be lowered in device settings. It also cautions that setting an application above the model’s refresh-rate cap will not improve performance and may drain charge faster: Steam Support: Steam Deck performance and refresh-rate guidance. The cited page does not provide a complete, verified menu walkthrough here, so use the current on-device controls and Steam’s current support material rather than relying on a guessed path. Available controls can vary by model and software version.
What settings can—and cannot—fix
Battery-saving settings do not restore aged capacity
Settings reduce current power use; they cannot restore capacity lost through battery aging. Microsoft explains that lithium-ion battery capacity declines with charge and discharge cycles: Microsoft’s battery-care guidance. If runtime has fallen substantially over time, the battery’s condition may be part of the cause, independent of your settings.
There is no single runtime figure for all handhelds
A meaningful comparison would need to hold the game, brightness, refresh rate, frame target, and power mode comparable, as well as account for battery condition. The official guidance cited here does not provide matched gaming-runtime tests across Steam Deck and Windows handhelds, so a fixed extra-hours promise would be misleading.
