Start by checking what is using power, then adjust only the settings that address the drain you find. Pixel owners can often improve daily runtime with targeted screen changes, sensible app battery management and heat avoidance—without turning off every background feature or notification.

Menu names and availability vary by Pixel model and Android version. Google’s guidance does not promise a fixed number of extra hours or a percentage gain from any setting.

1. Find what is using battery before changing settings

Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage. Review the app and system views to see where power went during the period shown. If an app stands out, inspect its background activity before deciding what to do. Google’s Pixel battery troubleshooting guide explains how to review usage and troubleshoot drain.

  • If an app is using more power than expected in the background, leave its battery setting at Optimized unless you have a specific reason to allow more background activity.
  • Restrict, force stop or uninstall an app only when its behavior warrants it. Force stopping essential apps or services can cause problems.
  • High system use is not automatically evidence of a failed component. Review recent changes and follow Google’s troubleshooting steps if the cause is unclear.

2. Reduce screen drain selectively

The display can be a meaningful source of drain, but you do not need to change every screen setting. Pick the options that fit how you use your Pixel. Google lists these display choices in its battery-saving guidance; some are available only on certain devices.

Setting What it changes Trade-off to consider
Brightness Lower brightness means the screen is less bright while it is on. The display may be harder to see in bright surroundings.
Adaptive brightness Adjusts screen brightness to your surroundings. Brightness changes automatically rather than staying at one manually chosen level.
Screen timeout A shorter timeout turns the display off sooner when you are not interacting with it. You may need to wake the screen more often while reading or referring to it.
Always-on Display Disabling it removes glanceable information shown while the screen is otherwise off. You will need to wake the phone to see that information.
Dark theme Changes the interface’s appearance. Whether it suits you is a preference; Google presents it as an option, not a requirement.
Smooth Display Changes the display experience on supported devices. Turning it off may change how smooth scrolling or motion looks. Availability varies by device.

For a low-friction first adjustment, try Adaptive brightness and a shorter screen timeout. Turn off Always-on Display only if the glanceable information is not worth its cost to you; keep Dark theme or Smooth Display if you prefer them.

3. Keep adaptive battery controls enabled

Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization are generally on by default. Adaptive Battery learns how you use apps and limits background activity for less-used ones, which can help extend runtime without a blanket shutdown of background features. Google notes that “To extend battery life, it may reduce performance and delay notifications.” See Google’s Adaptive Battery explanation if an app’s behavior changes.

Google Pixel 10a - 30+ Hours Battery, Camera Coach, Gemini - Obsidian 128GB
  • Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
  • The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

That trade-off matters most for apps where immediate background updates or notifications are important. If a particular app needs more background access, consider changing only that app’s battery behavior rather than disabling battery management across the phone.

4. Give updates and setup time to settle

A Pixel may use more battery for a while after a software update as it downloads and optimizes software. Google advises allowing a few days for update-related drain to settle; if unusual drain continues beyond that, continue troubleshooting instead of assuming a setting is at fault.

On a new or reset device, Adaptive Battery may take a few weeks to learn usage patterns and take full effect. During that period, judge the phone’s battery behavior with that adjustment time in mind.

5. Keep the phone cool and skip battery “training” rituals

Heat can increase battery drain even when the phone is not in use, and overheating can damage the battery. Avoid leaving a Pixel in hot conditions when possible. Google also says there is no need to train the battery by repeatedly charging it from full to empty or from empty to full; see its Pixel battery guidance.

6. Choose charging settings for battery health, not today’s runtime

Charging optimization is about charging behavior and long-term battery health, not reducing power consumed while you use the phone. With Adaptive Charging, the Pixel learns charging habits and aims to finish charging shortly before you typically unplug it. On supported devices, an 80% limit can prioritize long-term battery health; turn that limit off on a day when you need a full charge. Availability and menu paths vary by model and software version. Google describes these options in its charging optimization instructions.

7. Troubleshoot persistent drain

If drain remains unusual after you have checked app and system usage, follow Google’s troubleshooting flow. Pixel 6 and later include Battery diagnostics, which can help investigate battery problems. Persistent unexplained issues may call for Google support or repair; usage figures alone do not establish that a particular component has failed.
