Improve aim and movement by changing one thing at a time and testing it in play: start with a comfortable controller layout, tune sensitivity against moving targets, practise while strafing and moving between cover, then use ordinary matches to spot what still needs work. There is no universal sensitivity setting or evidence-based number of minutes that guarantees improvement; controls and movement mechanics differ by game.

Start with a reliable baseline

Before changing settings, write down your current horizontal and vertical look sensitivity, aim-down-sights (ADS) sensitivity or multiplier, response curve if available, deadzones, and button layout. This gives you a way to undo a change and helps you tell which adjustment affected your control.

Check that the controller is not drifting. If the reticle or character moves while you leave the sticks untouched, sensitivity may not be the problem. A deadzone can help filter unwanted stick input, but raising it too far can make small corrections feel unresponsive. Set it for your controller and the specific game rather than copying a universal value.

Keep aiming control available during movement

Look for a preset or remapping option that lets you jump, crouch, or slide without taking your thumb off the aiming stick. Try changing only the action that most often interrupts your aim, and keep the layout if the new placement feels awkward or unreliable.

You do not need extra hardware to test this. For example, Apex Legends documents controller presets including Bumper Jumper and Evolved; EA says Evolved allows jumping, ducking, sliding, and dropping from walls without sacrificing view agility. The options available depend on the game and platform. See EA’s Apex Legends accessibility and controls guide.

A controller with rear buttons or paddles is another possible way to bind movement actions while keeping your thumbs on the sticks, but it is a convenience option, not a guaranteed aim upgrade. Built-in presets or remapping may solve the same problem without a purchase.

Tune look and ADS sensitivity separately

Use an in-game firing range or training space to track moving targets at close and medium range. If your reticle repeatedly passes the target, lower the relevant sensitivity slightly. If you cannot turn quickly enough to keep up, raise it slightly. These are practical ways to diagnose what you feel, not a publisher-prescribed formula.

Where the game offers separate controls, test general look sensitivity independently from ADS sensitivity or its multiplier. You may need quick turns while looking around but slower, more controlled movement while aiming down sights. Change one control at a time, practise with it, and only then decide whether another adjustment is needed.

Do not copy a number from another game or player without checking what it controls and which title it belongs to. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III’s official PS4/PS5 guide describes a 20-point sensitivity scale and recommends default horizontal and vertical values of 3 as a starting point for new players in that game. That is a game-specific baseline, not a transferable console-FPS setting. The same guide advises choosing a sensitivity fast enough to turn but slow enough to hit targets: Modern Warfare III controls.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 likewise provides sensitivity controls and multipliers, including ways to adjust horizontal and vertical sensitivity and the difference between looking and aiming. Its movement guide puts the choice plainly: “There is no ‘correct’ sensitivity. The best sensitivity setting is the one that works for you.” Read the Black Ops 6 controls guide and movement guide for that game’s options and mechanics.

Practise aiming while moving

Once you can track a target while standing still, add movement in stages. Use the game’s training space to repeat a task rather than just firing randomly:

  1. Track a moving target while strafing left and right.
  2. Repeat while moving between cover, keeping your reticle ready for the next target.
  3. If useful in that title, add its own crouch, slide, jump, or dive mechanics and practise entering and exiting them without losing control of your aim.
  4. Play ordinary matches and note whether misses came from aim, movement, positioning, or a combination of them.

Movement can help you change position or make yourself harder to hit, but it has tradeoffs. Strafing changes your position while firing; sprinting may leave your weapon slower to ready. The timing and effects depend on the title. Modern Warfare III’s guide discusses practising routes on maps and these movement tradeoffs: Modern Warfare III movement.

Use mechanics as they work in your game rather than assuming a slide, sprint, or jump has the same cost everywhere. In Black Ops 6, for example, the movement guide describes sliding and diving as actions that require a sprint, and explains Omnimovement as a title-specific system.

Use a repeatable improvement loop

  1. Observe: identify a pattern that happens repeatedly, such as overshooting during ADS tracking or losing aim when you jump.
  2. Choose one change: adjust one sensitivity value, deadzone, or button assignment that relates to that pattern.
  3. Practise the matching task: return to the training space and repeat the same kind of tracking or movement exercise.
  4. Validate in matches: see whether the problem still occurs in ordinary play, where targets and situations vary.
  5. Keep or revert: keep a change only if it feels more reliable over repeated attempts; otherwise restore the baseline and try a different single adjustment.

Familiarity with maps can also make movement routes easier to navigate. Practise paths between cover and useful positions, but judge a route by whether it helps you move and stay ready to shoot—not merely by how fast it looks.

Check the options your game actually provides

  • Apex Legends: EA documents sensitivity, response curve, look deadzone, and controller presets. Increase deadzone only as needed to address unwanted input, and consult EA’s guide for the documented options.
  • Fortnite: Epic documents an aim-assist setting path and notes that settings may not be available on every platform. Aim assist is a game feature, not a replacement for crosshair control. Epic’s aim-assist instructions explain the menu path; its Combine article discusses practice, warm-ups, settings, and controller input curves.
  • Battlefield 2042: EA’s Uniform Soldier Aiming option is intended to keep aiming movement more consistent across magnifications. EA cautions that it is not an immediate aim-improvement setting; it is a tool intended to help aiming movement become more consistent over time. Its usefulness depends on the title and your settings. Read EA’s developer note.

These examples are not interchangeable recipes. Check the controls and training options for the specific game you play, and make changes only where the title offers the relevant setting.
