You can often improve a retro gaming setup by fixing the signal path you already have: identify the console’s exact model and video output, check the display’s inputs, and try reversible settings before buying anything. A compatible cable or scaler can help when there is a specific connection or picture-quality problem, but neither is necessary for every console or display.

Start by mapping your current setup

Before changing settings or shopping, write down the console model and region, the cable in use, the display’s available inputs, and any adapter or scaler between them. Console revisions and regional versions can differ in video-output support, while scaler input options vary by product. Use a system-specific reference to verify the exact hardware combination; the ConsoleMods system-specific settings reference includes model and regional cautions.

  • Console: record the system name, model or revision, and region.
  • Signal and cable: identify the connector and video signal the console actually outputs, rather than assuming it supports RGB or component.
  • Display: note which inputs it accepts and whether the console can connect directly.
  • Adapters or scaler: record each device in the chain and the inputs and output modes it supports.

RetroTINK’s product lineup covers inputs such as SCART, VGA, composite, S-Video, component, and digital video, but no single model necessarily accepts all of them. Check the specifications for the particular device at RetroTINK before buying.

Fix a blank screen before upgrading

If the display shows no image, first check that the console and game cartridge are clean and functioning. RetroTINK notes that a nonfunctional console or cartridge may not send a signal to its scaler in its FAQ. This is a basic fault check, not a reason to assume the cable or scaler is defective. The FAQ does not specify a cleaning method, so use guidance appropriate to your exact hardware rather than applying an unverified cleaning procedure.

Try a better-matched cable when the connection warrants it

If your console supports a higher-quality native video signal and your display or scaler accepts it, a compatible cable can improve the signal path. The early-version RetroTINK-5X manual recommends HD Retrovision component cables or high-quality, shielded/coaxial SCART RGB cables for the connections it describes. It warns that generic low-cost SCART cables can cause interference, unreliable sync, or picture dropouts.

Those recommendations are specific to the documented setup; they do not mean every console supports component or RGB, or that either is automatically the right choice for every region and display. Confirm the console’s output, the cable’s wiring and compatibility, and the receiving input before ordering. A well-matched cable is useful only if every device in the chain supports that signal.

Decide whether a scaler solves an actual problem

A scaler can convert an analog console signal for a modern HDTV and may provide scaling or image-processing controls. It is worth considering when the TV lacks a compatible input, the existing connection is unreliable, or you specifically want processing options. If your console already connects cleanly to a suitable display input, a scaler may add cost and setup complexity without solving a problem you have.

Compare devices against your actual console and display rather than choosing by a headline feature. Check the accepted inputs, supported output formats and resolutions, deinterlacing options, processing controls, latency specifications, and compatibility with the exact system. Manufacturer product lines may include composite, S-Video, component, RGB SCART, VGA, or digital inputs, but coverage varies by model.

As a model-specific example, the archival early-version RetroTINK-5X manual lists output modes up to 1440p and approximate latency of 0.25 frames in frame-lock mode or 0.25–1.25 frames in triple-buffered mode. Those figures describe that manual’s device and modes; they should not be applied to other scalers or assumed to describe current firmware. The manufacturer currently presents the RetroTINK-6X CE as an all-analog-input, 1440p-class scaler; its product page showed a price of $230 USD before sales tax in a 2026 page capture. Price and availability can change, so check the product page for current details.

Adjust image processing by comparing the result

Processing preferences depend on both the source signal and your taste. The 2020 RetroTINK 2X-M manual describes a useful example: its Retro composite filter may reduce some vertical artifacts from off-spec composite sources, including output from some retro consoles, but it sacrifices horizontal resolution. The manual says Auto may look sharper on cleaner sources and recommends trying both modes.

RCA to HDMI Converter, Wenter 1080P AV to HDMI Converter, Mini Composite CVBS Audio Video Adapter for VCR/VHS/Xbox/PS3/N64/Wii/Blue-Ray DVD Players (with RCA Male Cable & HDMI Cable)
  • Connect Classic RCA Devices to HDMI Displays: Bring older AV equipment back into use by converting yellow, white and red composite RCA signals into HDMI output for newer TVs, monitors and projectors. Choose between 720P and 1080P output at 60Hz to match your display. Please note that this av to hdmi adapter is built specifically for connecting an RCA/AV source to an HDMI display; it cannot convert an HDMI source to RCA/AV.
  • Complete 3-Cable Set Included: Includes separate RCA, HDMI and Micro USB cables for video/audio connection, HDMI output and power. The RCA and HDMI cables are detachable for flexible placement and use with compatible equipment. USB power is required for operation. A Micro USB cable is included; a 5V/1A power adapter is not included.
  • Selectable 720P and 1080P Output: Use the built-in resolution switch to select 720P or 1080P output at 60Hz based on your TV or monitor. No software or drivers are required. Connect the RCA source, HDMI display and USB power, then select the desired output resolution.
  • Compatibility with Legacy AV Devices: Compatible with RCA-output VCRs, VHS players, DVD players, set-top boxes and karaoke systems, as well as compatible PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Wii, N64, SNES and GameCube systems using RCA/AV output. Supports PAL, NTSC3.58, NTSC4.43, SECAM, PAL/M and PAL/N analog input formats.
  • HDMI Output Based on the Original Source:Converts an analog RCA signal to HDMI output with selectable resolution up to 1080P. The av to hdmi converter changes the signal format but does not turn lower-resolution VHS footage or classic game graphics into native HD content. Final picture quality depends on the original source, connected equipment and display. For stable operation, connect the included USB power cable to a 5V/1A USB power source.

Change one reversible setting at a time and compare the same scene. If a filter hides unwanted artifacts but also softens fine detail, decide which result looks better to you; there is no single setting that is best for every source.
