The right way to import transactions into Quicken depends on your file and platform. For a bank download, use a bank-provided QFX (Web Connect) file if your financial institution supports it. For a spreadsheet, follow the separate CSV steps for Windows or Mac—those importers differ, and the Windows importer adds every row without checking for duplicates.
Choose the right import route
| What you have | Use this route | Important difference |
|---|---|---|
| A bank-provided Web Connect download | QFX | Download it from your financial institution; whether it is available depends on the bank. |
| A spreadsheet or manually prepared transaction file | CSV | Windows and Mac have different requirements and account behavior. |
| A QIF file | QIF import, if your platform and account type support it | Eligibility is limited in Quicken’s Windows import overview; check the current help for your version and account. |
| Data being moved or merged from another Quicken product | QXF | QXF transfers Quicken data; it is not a bank download. |
Quicken’s Windows support documentation, updated June 5, 2026, says it cannot import Excel (.xls), QuickBooks, PDF, or OFX files. A spreadsheet must be saved as a properly structured CSV if you want to use the CSV importer; changing a filename extension does not convert a file’s format. Quicken’s Windows import overview
Import a CSV file in Quicken for Windows
The Windows importer expects columns in a fixed order. The first seven comma-separated positions are required, even when a field is optional for a particular transaction. A header row is optional, but if you include one, its columns must follow the same order.
| Position | Field | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Date | Required; use mm/dd/yyyy. |
| 2 | Payee | Required position; provide a value. |
| 3 | FI Payee | Required position; provide a value. |
| 4 | Amount | Required; use a signed amount. |
| 5 | Debit/Credit | Required position; Quicken recommends leaving it blank and putting the sign in Amount. |
| 6 | Category | Required position; provide a value. |
| 7 | Account | Required; provide a value. |
| 8–10, if used | Tag, Memo, Chknum | Keep this order. Optional columns still need their positions retained. |
Prepare the file with these additional rules:
- Use
Category:Subcategoryfor a subcategory andtag1:tag2for multiple tags. - Put quotation marks around a field that contains a comma.
- Do not expect a transfer to be inferred. A category containing a bracketed account name does not make the CSV row a transfer.
- Save the transaction data as a CSV in the required column order.
- In Quicken, select File > File Import > Banking Transactions > From (.CSV) File.
- Choose the file and follow the import prompts. Quicken reports an error if the file does not meet the required structure.
Check for duplicates before importing: Quicken for Windows does not match CSV rows against transactions already in the register. Every row in the file is added, so do not import a date range that is already recorded unless you intend to add those transactions again. Quicken’s Windows CSV instructions

Import a CSV file in Quicken for Mac
Quicken for Mac labels its CSV command File > Import > Mint.com File (CSV). Quicken says other CSV files can be used if they follow its guidelines. This workflow differs from Windows, so do not assume a file formatted for one importer will behave the same way in the other.
- Date: Required; use D/M/YY or DD/MM/YYYY.
- Amount: Required; use a signed number without a dollar sign or commas.
- Account: Required. The other columns may be blank, but must remain present.
- Debit/Credit: Use lowercase
debitorcreditfor expense or income display. - FI Payee: Quicken ignores this column.
- Prepare the CSV using Quicken’s Mac-specific column and formatting guidelines.
- Select File > Import > Mint.com File (CSV).
- Select the CSV and follow the prompts. Quicken creates a new account named after the CSV file; it does not link this import to an existing account.
Investment transactions cannot currently be imported through this CSV workflow. If a category in the file does not exist in the Quicken data file, Quicken says it will create the category. Quicken’s Mac CSV instructions

Import bank transactions with a QFX Web Connect file
QFX is Quicken’s Web Connect format for bank transaction downloads. It is different from QXF, which transfers Quicken data. The bank must support Web Connect, and file validation may depend on the institution’s online services and supported Quicken versions.
- Sign in to your financial institution’s website and open its transaction download or history area.
- Choose Quicken or Web Connect/QFX as the download format and save the QFX file.
- Open the file. If it does not launch Quicken automatically, import it using the bank-file import command documented for your platform.
- When prompted, choose the existing Quicken account to link, or create a new account.
- Review and accept transactions if Quicken presents them for review. Depending on your preferences, transactions may instead be added automatically.
When downloading older history or updating a register, choose the account and date range carefully. Quicken Help recommends starting on the day of, or the day after, the last transaction already recorded. If the QFX file is empty or has missing or duplicate rows, Quicken says to contact the financial institution that supplied it. Quicken also does not support QFX files created by third-party conversion tools. Quicken’s Web Connect troubleshooting guidance Quicken’s Windows import overview

When to use QIF or QXF
QIF: check account eligibility first
Quicken’s Windows import overview describes QIF transaction import for eligible asset and liability accounts, including house and vehicle accounts, and cash accounts. It excludes checking, savings, credit card, 401(k), and other brokerage accounts in that workflow. Business & Personal users may have additional QIF cases for accounts payable and invoices. These limits are specific to the documented Windows workflow; check current help for your Quicken version, platform, and account type before preparing a QIF file. Back up your Quicken data file before importing QIF. Quicken’s Windows import overview Quicken’s backup instructions
QXF: transfer Quicken data
Use QXF to share or merge Quicken account data between Quicken products, not to import bank transactions. On Mac, the documented path is File > Import > Quicken Windows File (QXF). Quicken recommends backing up before a merge and notes that some account types may not import in conversion scenarios. Quicken’s Mac QXF instructions

Why Quicken shows a download instead of an import
Quicken describes four bank connection methods: Express Web Connect (called Quicken Connect on Mac), Express Web Connect Plus, Direct Connect, and Web Connect. Web Connect requires you to download a file from the institution’s site. The other named methods connect on your behalf, subject to the institution and Quicken relationship, so transactions may arrive through an in-app update rather than a manual file import. Availability varies by institution. Quicken’s connection-type overview
