To move notes and tasks safely, first check what your current app can export and what the new app can import. Save an untouched copy of the export, test a small representative batch, then check whether notes, attachments, tags, dates, and task structure arrived as expected. No file format guarantees that two apps will preserve the same features.
What to check before moving your data
Import options depend on the source app, destination app, device, and account type. Before exporting, make a quick inventory:
- Source and destination app, device or operating system, and account type.
- Approximate number of notes and tasks, plus notebooks, folders, or sections.
- Important content and metadata: tags, attachments, embedded images, comments, checklists, creation dates, reminders, recurring rules, task hierarchy, priorities, assignees, deadlines, and durations.
Then compare the two apps’ documented import and export formats. A destination may map a source structure differently: Notion, for example, imports Evernote notebooks as pages and notes as database items. Apple Notes converts supported files into new notes, while Todoist’s task CSV uses explicit fields. These are different mappings, not interchangeable copies.
Choose a transfer route that fits the apps
Prefer a direct importer when current official guidance supports the exact app pair. Otherwise, use a documented export format the destination accepts. Check platform limits before beginning: Apple’s file-import instructions apply to Notes on Mac, and Evernote recommends using its desktop app for the best ENEX import experience.

| Route or format | What it can do | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Notion’s Evernote importer | Connect an Evernote account and import its content into Notion. Notion’s import guide describes the process. | Complex formatting and app-specific features may need cleanup; large imports and images also warrant verification. See Notion’s guidance and its import troubleshooting page. |
| Evernote ENEX | Evernote’s XML-based format carries notes, titles, available file attributes, and tags. Evernote documents import in desktop apps and web import settings. Read Evernote’s ENEX import instructions. | Notebook structure is not preserved by the described ENEX import. Apple Notes may omit unsupported attachments or features when importing ENEX. Apple’s import instructions list its supported behavior. |
| Evernote HTML | Exports notes as single-page or multi-page HTML, with note resources in a folder and metadata in the files. Useful when readable files matter more than native destination structure. See Evernote’s export guidance. | Whether a destination reconstructs the original note structure depends on its own importer; do not assume an HTML export becomes native notes automatically. |
| Markdown or other text files | Apple Notes for Mac lists TXT, RTF, RTFD, HTML, ENEX, and MD among supported import types. Markdown-to-rich-text conversion requires macOS Tahoe 26 or iOS/iPadOS 26 or later. Apple lists the supported types and requirements. | Evernote’s Settings import converts PDF, TXT, HTML, MD, and DOCX to editable notes; dragging other files into the note list may attach them instead. See Evernote’s file-import instructions. |
| CSV for tasks | Todoist supports importing and exporting project data as CSV. Its documented fields can represent descriptions, priorities, indentation, responsible people, dates, time zones, durations, deadlines, and section state. Read Todoist’s CSV guide. | Check that the destination supports compatible columns and values. A CSV alone does not establish that every app-specific rule, such as recurrence behavior, will transfer. |
For OneNote, do not follow old instructions for Microsoft’s legacy Evernote-to-OneNote Importer: Microsoft retired it effective September 2022. Microsoft’s web notebook export has a separate restriction: it applies to personal OneDrive notebooks, not work or school OneDrive or SharePoint notebooks. Check Microsoft’s importer notice and its notebook export and import guidance for current route details.
Export a backup before importing
Keep an unmodified local copy of the original export somewhere outside the destination app until you have checked the results. Evernote’s Mac and Windows desktop apps can export selected notes or entire notebooks as ENEX or HTML; users can include attributes such as tags, creation date, and author. Its export documentation says exports are desktop-only, allows up to 100 notes at a time or an entire notebook, and provides ENEX file-size settings from 300 MB to 2 GB. Those limits apply to Evernote’s documented export options, not to every app or format. See the export details.

Import a test batch, then audit the result
- Export a small, representative sample. Include ordinary items and examples that use attachments, images, tags, dates, nested tasks, recurring tasks, or complex formatting if those occur in your data.
- Import using the destination’s documented route. Follow its current app and platform instructions, and note any choices about notebooks, folders, or task projects.
- Compare counts and inspect actual items. Check that expected notes and tasks are present, then open a sample and inspect the content rather than relying only on a successful-import message.
- Audit task fields separately. Check hierarchy and indentation, assignees, dates and time zones, deadlines, priorities, durations, and section or project placement where relevant. Confirm recurring behavior in the destination rather than assuming a date field preserves a recurrence rule.
- Proceed in batches and keep the export. If the test passes, migrate the rest in manageable batches. Keep the original export until you have resolved omissions and are confident the destination contains the information you need.
Notion’s Evernote import guidance says imports are reliable up to about 5,000 notes and that larger imports may fail; Evernote rate limits can also lead to long backoffs, and images may not render correctly. This is an operational threshold for that specific Notion import path, not a general migration success rate. Notion also cautions that complex tables, styling, and app-specific features may require cleanup. See Notion’s import guidance and troubleshooting advice.

What a successful import does—and does not—prove
A completed import confirms that the destination processed a file or connection; it does not prove that every field survived or kept its meaning. ENEX can carry notes and tags without preserving Evernote notebook structure. An Apple Notes ENEX import can omit unsupported attachments or features. A task CSV can represent many useful fields, but a source-specific rule is only preserved if the destination has a compatible representation and imports it as intended.
Use the test batch to decide whether the destination’s mapping is acceptable. If an important element is missing, consider another documented route, retain the original export as a readable archive, or plan a manual transfer for that element before retiring the source app.
