To carry a completed Mass Effect 2 career into the original Mass Effect 3, start a new ME3 career and select IMPORT ME2 CHARACTER. Choose the completed ME2 career from the list. The import keeps Shepard’s level and decisions that affect ME3, according to the original PlayStation 3 manual. In Legendary Edition, saves remain separate by game; if you are starting at ME3 without an ME2 save, the optional Genesis 2 comic lets you set earlier story choices instead.
Import a completed Mass Effect 2 career into Mass Effect 3
- Finish the Mass Effect 2 career you want to continue. The ME3 manual describes importing a completed career.
- Start a new career in Mass Effect 3.
- Select IMPORT ME2 CHARACTER, then choose the completed ME2 career if it appears. This exact menu flow is documented in EA’s Mass Effect 3 PlayStation 3 manual.
The manual says importing Commander Shepard maintains the character’s level and decisions made in ME2 that affect ME3. It does not promise that every statistic, item, or other character detail carries over.

What to do if the ME2 career does not appear
- Confirm that the career is complete; an unfinished ME2 career may not be available to import.
- Check that you are looking for a save from a compatible release and platform context. The cited manual documents the original PS3 flow, not a universal procedure for every platform or edition.
- Do not assume a single save-folder location or that a save can be moved between consoles, storefronts, or editions. Exact paths and universal transfer steps are not established for all configurations.
Importing choices in Legendary Edition
Mass Effect Legendary Edition includes Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, and EA describes choices as carrying from one game to the next. Its unified launcher does not combine the games’ save files: EA says saves remain unique to each game and can be managed independently. See EA’s save-management explanation.
If you begin at ME3 in Legendary Edition without an earlier save, the optional Mass Effect: Genesis 2 comic lets you make earlier-game choices. This sets story choices; it is not an import of your original ME2 career save. EA’s Legendary Edition page describes the collection and choice continuity.

Can you transfer a save between the original games and Legendary Edition?
Do not treat cross-edition migration as guaranteed. An EA staff forum response says an ME2 Legendary Edition save may be moved into the original ME3 save folder on PC and may work, while warning that differences between releases can cause issues. That is a limited forum answer, not a universal or supported recipe for every PC setup, platform, or direction of transfer: EA forum response about ME2 Legendary Edition and original ME3 saves.
For a standard import within the same release context, use ME3’s in-game import option. For other combinations, verify compatibility for the exact edition and platform rather than relying on the fact that both games appear in the same launcher or collection.
