A documented option is HyperFormula, a TypeScript headless spreadsheet engine that runs in a browser or Node.js backend.
How do I implement spreadsheet formulas in a web app?
Start by choosing a calculation engine, then connect it to your grid through a clear state boundary. The grid should not be responsible for interpreting formulas or calculating dependent cells. Instead, it sends edits to the engine and displays the engine’s calculated results.
HyperFormula describes itself as a headless spreadsheet formula parser and evaluator, with documented use in browser and Node.js environments. Its project page describes approximately 400 built-in functions; that count is version-sensitive, not a permanent compatibility guarantee. Its documentation covers compatibility with Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets formula syntax, but syntax compatibility alone does not establish full behavioral parity with either product. Build the engine from cell data
In HyperFormula’s v3.4.0 basic-usage guide, a formula-containing data array can be used to create an engine instance. For example, a row may contain values in A1 and B1 and the formula =SUM(A1:C1) in another cell. The engine evaluates the formula, and the application can retrieve the calculated cell result with getCellValue. Follow the versioned guide for the exact setup and API details: HyperFormula v3.4.0 basic usage.

Keep entered content separate from calculated values
Store a cell’s source content—such as a literal value or formula—in application state separately from its computed result. When a user edits a cell, pass the edit to the engine; then read the affected calculated values and update the grid. This prevents a displayed result from overwriting the formula that produced it, and gives the UI a consistent distinction between what the user entered and what the engine calculated.
How should a web app recalculate formulas when a cell changes?
Recalculation must follow formula dependencies, not just the edited cell. Microsoft calls cells referenced by a formula precedents and cells whose formulas use an input dependents. A dependent can itself be a precedent for another formula, creating a chain across multiple levels. When an input changes, the engine needs to recompute the affected dependents so displayed results remain consistent. Microsoft: display relationships between formulas and cells

For ordinary edits, a useful application flow is: update the engine with the new source content, let it evaluate affected formulas, then refresh the corresponding displayed values. Avoid writing a separate partial recalculation implementation in the grid unless the chosen engine explicitly requires it; the dependency graph is the part that makes chained formulas reliable.
Group bulk changes
Importing a large range or applying many edits one by one can trigger repeated evaluations if each mutation recalculates immediately. HyperFormula’s API documents suspending and resuming evaluation; resuming triggers recalculation for the operations performed during the suspension. Use that mechanism around batches where appropriate, rather than recalculating after every individual mutation. Check the API for the version in use: HyperFormula API reference.

How do I choose a formula engine?
Compare engines against the behavior your product actually needs. A library’s function count or familiar syntax is not enough to determine whether it fits a particular workbook, runtime, or user expectation.
- Formula and syntax coverage: Identify required functions, operators, and syntax, then verify how the engine handles unsupported formulas and errors.
- Runtime placement: Decide whether calculations belong in the browser, a Node.js backend, or a combination. HyperFormula documents browser and Node.js use.
- Workbook model: Check how the engine represents workbooks and worksheets and whether its scope matches your app.
- Dependency and recalculation behavior: Confirm how edits propagate through formulas and whether bulk operations can be grouped.
- Custom functions: Verify how custom functions are registered, evaluated, and recalculated when inputs change.
- Performance: Test representative workbook sizes and edit patterns in your own application; the cited product documentation does not establish performance for your workload.
- Licensing: The HyperFormula repository lists GPLv3 and proprietary licensing options. Commercial teams should verify current terms and which option fits their deployment. HyperFormula license information
HyperFormula is an option for an independent spreadsheet-like calculator, not the only way to add formulas. An Excel add-in has a different integration context: the Excel JavaScript API operates with Excel, and its documentation includes access to precedent and dependent relationships. What limitations should I account for?
HyperFormula’s v3.4.0 known-limitations page documents constraints that can affect an application design. These are version-specific and should be checked against the version you plan to deploy. HyperFormula v3.4.0 known limitations
- One workbook per instance: An instance handles one workbook, which can contain multiple worksheets. If the app needs multiple independent workbooks, account for that in how instances are created and managed.
- Cycle detection with conditional branches: Detection considers possible dependencies that may not be used after a condition is evaluated. As a result, an
IFexpression can produce a cycle error even when the branch that appears to run would avoid a circular reference. - Custom-function array sizing: Custom functions do not automatically recalculate the size of their result arrays when formula dependencies change. Applications relying on dynamically sized custom-function results need to account for this behavior.
More generally, define the supported feature set explicitly. Excel or Google Sheets syntax compatibility is useful, but it does not by itself promise identical behavior across every formula, error case, or workbook feature. The cited documentation does not provide a complete compatibility or error-handling matrix for every spreadsheet product.

How should the grid present formula results and errors?
Treat formula display as a rendering decision, not as a substitute for the engine’s source data. Keep the entered formula available for editing, and use the calculated value for the cell’s displayed result. Establish a consistent presentation for calculation errors and unsupported behavior so users can distinguish an invalid formula from an empty cell or an ordinary text value.
Before shipping, decide which functions and formula behaviors the app supports, what users see when a formula is unsupported, and how edits and bulk changes update visible results. That contract matters especially when users bring expectations from Excel or Google Sheets: a familiar formula spelling does not ensure every edge case behaves the same way.
