To identify a vintage Kenner Star Wars figure, examine the whole figure—not just its date stamp. Record its sculpt and paint details, copyright/date and country-of-origin (COO) marks, then compare the figure and any accessory with a character-specific reference. No single stamp, color, or accessory feature proves authenticity on its own.
Start by identifying the figure and its exact version
First note the character, clothing, sculpt details, paint colors, construction, and any accessory. A character name alone is not enough: one character may have multiple production variants, and licensed non-Kenner figures, bootlegs, and modern reproductions can resemble original-era products. “Old-looking” is not evidence by itself.
Separate possible explanations for a difference: it may be an original production variation, age-related change, a licensed product from another maker, a bootleg, or a modern reproduction. Variant Villain’s 101 Reference Guide discusses these distinctions and why identification depends on more than appearance.
Read the copyright and COO marks—but don’t treat them as a production date
Look for copyright/date and country-of-origin marks, often on a leg. Record the wording and exact position; “has a stamp” is not a useful identification record. Marks may say Hong Kong, Made in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Made in Taiwan, Macau, or China. Some later releases have no COO mark or an area that appears modified where a mark was removed.

A date stamp generally identifies the design-patent year, not the year that particular figure was made. In an October 27, 2021 guide, Variant Villain author Chihuahua explains: “A figure with a 1977 date stamp could be produced many years later in 1983 for example, but the copyright is still in effect from 1977.” A 1977 stamp, therefore, does not establish that an individual figure was manufactured in 1977.
Compare multiple clues to assess a variant
Use mark layout alongside sculpt and paint details. Moulds were used across factories, and mould cavities could have hand-stamped dates and COO marks whose placement and spacing differ. Sculpt differences can also help distinguish figures or accessories. A mark’s wording or location is evidence to compare, not a standalone verdict about a figure’s year or authenticity.

- Marks: Compare the exact wording, placement, and spacing with a reference for that character and version.
- Sculpt: Check distinctive features of the figure and moulded details rather than relying only on the character’s name.
- Paint and material: Compare colors and visible material details, but allow for aging. UV exposure, temperature, chemicals, and other effects can change color or material; one color difference does not automatically indicate a factory variant.
For example, the High As A Koit Luke Skywalker Farmboy comparison distinguishes versions using stamp placement, paint, and hair details, and lists examples associated with different card-back eras. It is a useful illustration of character-specific comparison, not a complete or necessarily current catalog.
Identify weapons and accessories separately
Do not assume an accessory is original just because it seems to match a figure. Weapons and accessories can have their own variations, and reproductions exist. The Imperial Gunnery describes its visual reference to original items and reproductions as a comparison resource and notes that improved reproduction quality and materials can make detection harder.

- Match the accessory to a reliable figure-and-accessory reference.
- Compare visible mould details and material rather than relying on one superficial feature.
- Keep the accessory identification separate from the figure identification: confidence in one does not prove the other.
A Smithsonian collection search result describes a Kenner A New Hope Jawa dated 1977 and made in Hong Kong, and notes that both vinyl-cape and cloth-cape versions included a blaster. That example illustrates why the specific variant and its associated accessory matter; it does not establish that every Jawa or blaster with similar marks is authentic.

For a loose or boxed item, record what can actually be seen before deciding what it is. This makes it easier to compare against references and to communicate uncertainty to a seller, collector, or specialist.

- Write down the character and visible sculpt, clothing, construction, and paint details.
- Record the full copyright/date and COO wording, along with each mark’s location and whether it looks intact, removed, or altered.
- Describe the accessory separately, including visible mould details and material.
- Compare the combined evidence with a character-specific figure and accessory reference.
- State a qualified identification if details are missing, unclear, or inconsistent; seek a specialist reference or an experienced collector when needed.
A clear photograph may help with comparison, but an incomplete view cannot settle details it does not show. If the marks, sculpt, paint, or accessory do not agree with a reference—or a reproduction cannot be ruled out—describe the item as uncertain rather than claiming authentication.
