Start with your router or mesh system’s connected-device list, then compare each unfamiliar entry with the Wi-Fi details on your phones, computers, TVs, and smart-home devices. A device name, IP address, or MAC-address vendor hint can narrow the search, but no single clue proves what the device is. If you still cannot account for a device, secure the Wi-Fi network through your router rather than relying on MAC filtering.
1. Check the router or mesh app first
Your router has the most useful first-party view of devices joining your network. Sign in to its administration page or open the router or mesh app, then look for a section named Connected devices, Wireless clients, Client list, or DHCP clients. The FTC recommends checking the router interface under those kinds of labels in its guide to securing home internet-connected devices.
Record the fields your system provides: device name, IP address, MAC address, wired or wireless connection, connection status, last-seen time, and any usage details. Router interfaces vary, so some models will not show all of these. Google says supported Google Wifi and Google Home networks can list Wi-Fi-connected devices and devices connected by Ethernet to a Wifi router or point, with details including status, IP address, and MAC address; see Google’s instructions for viewing devices connected to your network.
Check whether the entry is active now or only retained in a recent-device history. A stale entry may belong to a device that has left the network, rather than a current connection.

2. Match the router entries to devices you own
Walk through the home and make an inventory rather than guessing from a manufacturer label. Include phones, laptops, tablets, televisions, game consoles, printers, cameras, streaming boxes, speakers, smart-home hubs, access points, mesh points, and equipment supplied by your internet provider. Ask household members and recent guests whether they have connected devices.
Names and vendor hints can be misleading: a router may show the maker of a network adapter or component instead of the retail brand or familiar name of the complete device. Treat those clues as leads, not proof. Check whether an entry is wired or wireless, too. An Ethernet-connected television, console, mesh point, or hub may be listed separately from wireless clients.

- Broad Compatibility: Supports Windows and Mac operating systems; TWAIN driver also included
For stronger identification, compare several clues together: the router’s current connection details, the device’s own Wi-Fi address, a familiar name, who owns it, and whether the entry disappears when that device is intentionally disconnected. A vendor lookup or matching name on its own is not conclusive.
3. Find the address a device is using on Wi-Fi
The MAC address shown in a device’s Wi-Fi settings is often a better comparison than a hardware address copied from a box or saved in old notes. Phones and computers may use a private or randomized address for a particular network, so a familiar device can appear under an unfamiliar or changed address.

Android
On Android, open the connected network’s details in Wi-Fi settings and compare the address shown there with the router entry. Google’s Android advanced network settings guide explains how to find the hardware Wi-Fi MAC and the address used for a connected network. On Android 10 and later, the network details can show another address labeled Randomised MAC address. Menu names and availability vary by phone manufacturer.
iPhone, iPad, and other Apple devices
Apple devices can use a different private Wi-Fi address for each network, and the address may rotate. Apple describes Off, Fixed, and Rotating modes for supported devices and operating systems; defaults depend on the network’s security type. See Apple’s explanation of Wi-Fi privacy and its instructions for using private Wi-Fi addresses. Compare the address currently shown in that network’s Wi-Fi details with the router’s entry, not an old hardware MAC. Keep private addresses enabled for privacy unless you have a specific network-management reason to change the setting.

Windows, Mac, and Linux computers
Open the computer’s Wi-Fi or network settings and inspect the details for the network it is connected to. Compare the address presented for that connection with the router’s MAC address; do not assume that a manufacturer label or address on the device casing is the one currently used. Exact menu paths differ across operating-system versions and computer makers, so use the connected network’s own details rather than relying on a single universal path.

A network scanner such as Nmap can discover hosts reachable from the computer running the scan and may offer operating-system or device-type clues. Its documentation describes remote operating-system detection and device-type categories such as routers, wireless access points, general-purpose computers, and audiovisual devices. Use scanning only on a network you own or are authorized to administer.

A scan does not establish a device’s identity. Nmap warns that hosts can be misidentified or remain unidentified, and some results can be substantially wrong; see its guidance on misidentified and unidentified hosts and device types. A scan can also miss devices that are asleep, isolated on another network or VLAN, or not responding to the discovery method. Treat it as a supplement to the router list, not a replacement. For a typical household, scanning adds setup and interpretation work that may not be necessary.
Router list or network scan: which should you use?
| Method | Best use | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Router or mesh client list | First check: shows the router’s own client records and may include connection type, address, status, or usage. | Available details and history depend on the router model and app; a name or vendor hint may not identify the complete device. |
| Local network scan | Additional host-discovery and fingerprint clues for devices reachable from the scanning computer. | May miss quiet or isolated devices, requires more technical setup, and can misclassify operating systems or device types. |
5. Secure the network if a device remains unexplained
After checking household devices, guests, smart-home equipment, mesh or repeater nodes, and ISP-provided equipment, refresh the router’s list and review its security settings. If a connection still appears unauthorized, change the Wi-Fi password to a unique one using the router’s supported settings, update router firmware, and reconnect devices you trust. Consult the router documentation before blocking a particular entry.
Do not treat MAC filtering as a security boundary. Apple notes in its recommended Wi-Fi router settings that MAC addresses can be copied, spoofed, or changed, so filtering them is not a dependable way to prevent access. The FTC likewise advises securing the router and reviewing connected devices in its home Wi-Fi security guidance.
