Check the candidate against the exact edition before applying its track names: a matching disc layout is a useful clue, not proof that the listing describes your copy.
Start with the CD and its packaging
Check the booklet, back cover, tray card, and any inserts. Record the soundtrack title, printed track names and order, disc number, artist or composer credits, label, catalog number, barcode, country, and edition. For a multi-disc set, keep each disc’s track list separate.

These details help distinguish reissues and regional editions that may share a game or soundtrack title. If you still have the disc, an optical drive that can read audio CDs lets Picard inspect its TOC. A computer without a built-in drive can use a compatible external CD/DVD drive.
Use MusicBrainz Picard to look up the CD
- Insert the audio CD in the drive and open MusicBrainz Picard.
- Use Picard’s CD lookup to read the disc’s TOC. Picard compares the layout with MusicBrainz release listings and returns possible matches. See Picard’s album-information retrieval documentation.
- Compare each candidate with the physical release before selecting it. MusicBrainz instructs users to check the release country, date, label, catalog number, barcode, media type, and cover art in its CD workflow.
- After choosing a release, check that each listed track is associated with the correct audio file. Review the proposed metadata before saving tags.
A MusicBrainz Disc ID is derived from the CD’s track frame offsets and links a physical disc layout to a release listing. It is not a guaranteed unique identifier for a commercial edition: different pressings can yield different IDs, and distinct discs can sometimes share an ID. Read MusicBrainz’s Disc ID explanation for the limitations.

Verify the exact edition before tagging
Do not accept a result solely because its soundtrack or game title looks right. Compare the identifiers and contents together:
- Country or region and release date
- Record label, catalog number, and barcode
- Media type and cover art
- Number and order of tracks, plus track durations
- Printed details on the booklet, tray card, or disc
A TOC match can identify a likely track layout, but packaging identifiers help establish whether the listing corresponds to your edition. If the candidate’s track order or file mapping does not fit, do not apply its tags without resolving the mismatch.

If Picard does not find the right listing
Search the database manually
Search MusicBrainz using the game and soundtrack or release title, credited artist or composer, label, and catalog number. Compare search results with the disc and packaging rather than relying on a title match. Picard supports manual database searches when automatic lookup does not find the correct release; its retrieval guide describes the available lookup methods.
Submit an unmatched Disc ID
If you have the CD but no candidate matches, MusicBrainz provides a workflow for submitting the disc ID and attaching its TOC to the correct release. If the release itself is missing, document the printed track list and edition identifiers and consider adding the release. The MusicBrainz guide to adding Disc IDs explains the submission process and how disc IDs can help identify CDs and provide track lengths.

If you only have ripped audio files
When the files are already grouped as an album, Picard can look up the cluster. If they are not grouped, Picard can scan audio fingerprints using AcoustID. These methods can suggest a release, but they do not remove the need to verify that the proposed edition and track-to-file mapping fit your files. See Picard’s retrieval documentation and its instructions for matching files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Example: a soundtrack listing is edition-specific
MusicBrainz lists a mixed-mode CD release of The House of the Dead for Sega Saturn in Japan, dated 1998-03-26, with catalog number GS-9173. Its tracks include “The House Of The Dead (Advertise),” “Into The Dark (Stage 1 BGM),” and “Name Entry.” This illustrates why the exact release matters; it does not establish that other editions use the same layout. See the MusicBrainz release record.
