You can identify a song directly from some Wear OS watches with a music-recognition app, but availability depends on your specific watch. Google Play lists What’s that song? as a standalone option that needs internet but says it does not need a phone connection. Shazam also says it supports Android Wear, though its current compatibility with particular watches is not specified. Check the app listing on your watch before relying on either.

Try a standalone Wear OS recognition app
What’s that song?
Google Play describes What’s that song? as a standalone Wear OS music-recognition app. The developer listing says it requires internet, but not a phone app or phone connection. Its stated update date is November 18, 2025; that date is a listing detail, not evidence of recognition accuracy or guaranteed compatibility with every watch.
Open Google Play on the target watch and search for the app. Check the listing for availability and any stated Wear OS version, language, or regional limits before installing. The listing does not report an accuracy rate, and there is no basis here to promise that it will identify every song or work reliably in every listening environment.
Shazam
Shazam’s official apps page says, “Shazam is available for both Apple Watch and Android Wear.” That establishes broad platform support, but not that the app can currently be installed on every Wear OS watch. Search for Shazam in Google Play on your watch and confirm its listing shows it as compatible before counting on it.

Why Assistant or Gemini is not a guaranteed substitute
Google documents Assistant on selected watches running Wear OS 3.0 or later and Gemini on selected watches running Wear OS 4.0 or later. You need internet through a paired phone or an LTE provider, and Google cautions that some features may be unavailable over LTE. The examples in Google’s help include playing music, but they do not establish that either assistant can identify a song playing nearby through the watch microphone.
Google’s July 9, 2025 announcement said Gemini was beginning to roll out to Wear OS watches from Pixel, Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, and Xiaomi, with rollout to watches running Wear OS 4 or later. It described general assistance and information access, not ambient song recognition. Availability can depend on watch model and rollout, so check Google’s current requirements for your device rather than treating an assistant as a Shazam-like feature.

Use Pixel Now Playing if you have a Pixel phone
Google documents Now Playing as a Pixel phone feature that automatically identifies nearby music. It is a phone-based fallback, not a general Wear OS watch function. Google says the feature uses an on-device music library; for manual searches, a short digital audio fingerprint may be sent to Google, but raw audio and background conversations are not. Now Playing also offers identification history and connected streaming services. See Google’s Pixel Now Playing help for current setup and behavior.

Spotify for Wear OS is for listening, not identifying ambient music. Its watch app supports playback controls and streaming over the watch’s internet connection; Premium users can download playlists, albums, and audiobooks for offline listening. Spotify notes that features vary by device model. Once you know a song’s name, Spotify may help you play or save it, but it is not documented here as a recognition tool. See Spotify’s Wear OS support page.
