To identify a possible dinosaur fossil, first work out whether it is a body fossil, a trace of an animal’s activity, or a rock feature that only looks fossil-like. Then compare preserved anatomy and geological context with reliable references, and stop at the narrowest identification the evidence supports. A tooth or footprint can offer useful clues, but neither automatically identifies a species.

Start by identifying what kind of evidence you have

A fossil may preserve an animal’s body or evidence of what it did. That distinction changes what you can reasonably infer.

  • Body fossils include bones, teeth and armor, as well as some impressions of soft tissue. They preserve part of the animal itself.
  • Trace fossils record activity, not body anatomy. Footprints and coprolites (fossilized droppings) are examples. The U.S. National Park Service describes dinosaur trace fossils as “records of the activity of a living dinosaur” (NPS fossil record).
  • Eggs are a special case: they preserve evidence of reproduction, but an egg-shaped object in rock may instead be a concretion, a naturally formed mineral feature.

Also allow for a non-fossil explanation. Color, size and a suggestive shape are not enough to identify a specimen. Fossils are often incomplete, and even genuine bones can be fragile or fractured.

Document the find before trying to name it

  1. Record its location and geological setting. Note where it was found and what kind of rock surrounds it. Context can help with an identification, but a place associated with dinosaurs does not prove that every unusual object found there is one.
  2. Photograph it in place, then from several angles. Include a scale in the pictures. Record features such as surface texture, symmetry, possible joint surfaces, tooth shape, and whether a track has recognizable toe impressions.
  3. Describe what is actually preserved. Note which parts are missing, broken or obscured. A partial feature should not be treated as if it were a complete diagnostic one.
  4. Compare it with a reputable museum reference. Look for anatomical characters that match, not just an overall resemblance. The American Museum of Natural History’s 2023 teaching activity shows how characters in individual bones can support a classification, while explaining that the evidence may identify a broader branch of the dinosaur family tree rather than a species (AMNH fossil-classification activity).
  5. Use the most specific label the evidence supports. Depending on what is preserved, that may be “possible fossil,” “trace fossil,” “dinosaur,” or a broader animal group—not a named species.

What common dinosaur fossil types can tell you

Bone fragments

A bone fragment can support an identification when it preserves useful anatomy, but color and size alone do not establish that it came from a dinosaur. Fossils are commonly incomplete; a fragment may not retain the features needed to distinguish among animals. Compare its shape and any preserved joint surfaces with reference specimens, and keep the identification broad if the relevant anatomy is missing. The Natural History Museum notes that bones can be fragile and fractured, which is one reason fossils are carefully excavated with surrounding rock and protective field jackets (Natural History Museum: finding dinosaurs).

Teeth

Tooth shape can suggest feeding adaptations, but it is not a species label. Many theropod teeth are pointed, slightly backward-curving and serrated. Plant-eating dinosaurs had varied teeth: some had ridged cutting surfaces, broad grinding surfaces, or pencil-like teeth suited to raking leaves. These are broad patterns, not a standalone diagnostic test. Compare the tooth’s features with a reference and avoid claiming more than the preserved evidence shows (AMNH dinosaur facts).

Footprints and trackways

A footprint is a trace fossil. Its shape and position in a trackway may preserve clues about locomotion or behavior, but those clues do not necessarily identify the animal’s exact species. Without bones nearby, the maker may remain uncertain; the Natural History Museum notes, “Without bones nearby, we can’t be certain what species made these fossilised footprints” (Natural History Museum: identifying a dinosaur).

Egg-like objects

Do not assume a rounded rock is an egg. Concretions can resemble fossil eggs, while real fossil eggs may be squashed or distorted. Even when an egg fossil is genuine, linking it to a particular dinosaur can be difficult; embryo remains that might help make that connection are rare (NPS fossil record).

Distinguish dinosaurs from pterosaurs

Pterosaurs were flying reptiles and close relatives of dinosaurs, but they were not dinosaurs. A notable comparison is the hip socket: in dinosaurs, it is an open hole; in pterosaurs, bone forms the socket. Pterosaurs also had a wing membrane supported by an elongated finger, rather than the familiar feathered wings of birds. Their bones are fragile and often preserved only in fragments, so an incomplete specimen may not retain enough anatomy for a confident identification (Natural History Museum: why pterosaurs are not dinosaurs; Natural History Museum: pterosaurs).

These comparisons help distinguish pterosaurs from dinosaurs when the relevant features are preserved; they are not a complete identification key for every prehistoric animal. Do not call an animal a dinosaur simply because it lived in the same broad prehistoric era or is commonly pictured alongside dinosaurs.

Choose a confidence level that matches the evidence

Identification is a progression, not a forced choice between “dinosaur” and a named species. A complete skeleton preserves more characters than an isolated tooth or partial bone, and the available evidence may support a broad group without resolving a species. The AMNH activity demonstrates how classification can narrow to a clade or set of branches rather than a precise species.

Handle an uncertain specimen carefully

Do not pry, clean or remove an unknown fossil. Fragile material can break, and removing surrounding rock may destroy context or damage the specimen. If the find is unusual or its identification matters, contact a museum identification service or a qualified paleontologist. Collecting rules vary by location, so check the rules that apply where the specimen was found before taking any action.
