Record where and when the trap ran, what kind of trap it was, and how the specimen was preserved. Then confirm that the insect is a beetle and use an identification key or guide designed for your region and the likely beetle group. A photo can suggest a match, but small, damaged or similar-looking beetles may need a specialist or a preserved specimen. Without the specimen, location and trap details, no individual beetle can be identified from the title alone.

Start with the trap and collection details

Trap catches are shaped by how and where a trap operates. A pitfall trap samples insects that encounter and fall into a ground-level container; it does not provide a complete inventory of beetles living in a forest. NEON’s ground-beetle protocol uses pitfall traps and sorts Carabidae, the ground beetle family, for identification to species or morphospecies. Its page describes the catch as a snapshot of the invertebrate community, not a census: NEON ground beetle methods.

Before handling a specimen, write down the information that will help you select a reference and assess a possible identification:

  • Country, region and precise locality; coordinates are useful when available.
  • Date and, if known, time the trap was checked, plus the trap’s operating interval.
  • Trap design, placement and any lure or preservative used.
  • Habitat and the specimen’s condition, including whether it is intact, damaged or preserved.
  • Collector’s name and a label linking the specimen to its trap and field notes.

Collection records commonly retain locality, collection date and collector details. The National Forest Insect Collection of India provides a searchable example of specimen records, but it is a reference collection rather than a universal identification key.

Confirm that it is a beetle and document it

First check that the insect is a beetle rather than another insect caught in the same trap. For a larger, intact specimen, take clear photographs before moving or altering it. Include an overhead view and a side view, with a scale for length, and photograph the head, antennae, legs and wing covers where possible. Keep the specimen associated with its photographs and collection label.

Photographs are useful for comparison and for asking an expert, but they may not show the structural details needed for a reliable species identification. Small specimens may require magnification. The Coleopterists Society of Britain and Ireland’s identification guidance cautions that photo galleries and field guides may not cover every genus or species, particularly among smaller beetles.

Choose a guide that fits the region and beetle group

Start with a guide or key whose geographic coverage includes the collection site. A family-level key can narrow the possibilities; proceed to genus or species only if a regional resource supports that level. A guide for a different country or a specialized habitat may still explain how to use a key, but it should not be treated as a species authority for your specimen.

For Britain and Ireland

The Field Studies Council’s Distinctive terrestrial beetles AIDGAP is a 2025 introductory pocket guide for Britain and Ireland. The publisher describes a yes/no flow-chart key to distinctive beetle families, annotated photographs of 21 distinctive species and illustrations of 23 beetle groups. It is designed to help with recognizable groups, not to identify every species that might occur in a forest-trap sample. The publisher page also gives an estimate of roughly 4,000 beetle species in 103 families in Britain and Ireland; that estimate is attributed to the page, not presented as a 2025 survey. See the Field Studies Council guide description.

For other regions

Look for a current regional checklist, key or museum collection relevant to the locality. The National Forest Insect Collection of India can help with reference records and taxonomy, but its searchable specimens do not make it an interactive key for all forest beetles. The Coleopterists Society’s recommended galleries, books and checklists are specifically oriented to Britain and Ireland.

Use a morphological key carefully

A dichotomous key narrows an identification through successive choices between paired descriptions of features. Follow each choice using the structure described by the key, rather than selecting the option that merely looks closest overall. The Canadian Grain Commission explains the method and notes that knowledge of insect structure helps; its beetle key, however, is for stored-product beetles in Canada, not forest beetles. Its general explanation is at Insect identification keys.

Entomology Specimen Collection Jar – Traditional Killing Jar Design (No Chemicals Included) – for Insect Field Collection, Scientific Study & Educational Use
  • 16 oz clear glass jar with a wide 89-400 mouth (3 inch opening)
  • Pre-lined with plaster of Paris - ready to charge with your killing agent
  • Durable pulp & poly-lined lid - resists leaks and holds fumes safely
  • Easy to use, clean, and reuse
  • Handmade in small batches for quality and consistency

As you compare candidates, record the characters the relevant regional key asks you to examine. Depending on the key, these may include body size and proportions, antennae, legs, surface features or structures that differ by sex. Do not treat color alone as diagnostic unless the key says it is. Range, habitat and season can help test whether a candidate is plausible, but they do not replace the required structural characters.

Check the candidate and state uncertainty honestly

A picture match or common-name match is a hypothesis, not confirmation. Before settling on a name, check that the guide covers the collection region and the likely group, and that the specimen shows the characters needed to distinguish the candidate from similar beetles. A guide that omits species in a genus cannot rule them out simply because one pictured species looks similar.

  • If the visible evidence supports only a family or genus, record that level rather than forcing a species name.
  • Use “possible” or “provisional” for an identification based on photographs or an incomplete key comparison.
  • Seek expert review for a difficult specimen, a research sample or a possible pest detection.
  • Keep an intact specimen as a voucher when appropriate and when collection or institutional rules allow it.

For research or pest-detection samples in the United States, USDA APHIS lists taxonomic support, sample-submission and confirmatory-identification resources, including guidance for bark beetles and wood borers. Follow the current requirements of the relevant service: USDA APHIS CAPS procedures. An expert-reviewed name and a DNA-supported result are different kinds of evidence; state which basis applies rather than implying confirmation that has not occurred.

Preserve and submit specimens according to the recipient’s rules

Preservation depends on the specimen’s condition and what the receiving collection or diagnostic service needs. Florida’s forest health service advises storing or shipping adult beetles in alcohol for its service and requests the sender’s name, collection locality and a contact email or phone number. This is jurisdiction- and service-specific guidance, not a universal rule for museums, laboratories or DNA workflows. Check the recipient’s current instructions before changing preservatives or shipping a specimen: Florida Forest Service sample-submission guidance.

When an expert or reference collection is useful

Ask a museum, university collection, regional specialist society or government diagnostic service for help when the specimen is tiny, damaged, outside the guide’s coverage, or important to research or pest detection. Send the locality, date, trap details, clear photographs and your tentative identification level. Ask before mailing a specimen so you can meet that recipient’s packaging and preservation requirements.

Large monitoring programs also distinguish field sorting from more intensive confirmation. NEON reports that a subset of pinned ground beetles receives secondary expert identification, with up to 467 pinned ground beetles per site per year sent for that review; the figure describes NEON’s program, not a typical forest-trap yield. The same program reports DNA barcoding for some specimens. See NEON’s ground beetle methods and data.
