To identify an unknown cable, inspect both connectors, read the markings on the cable and packaging, then verify the cable family’s specifications against the devices or installation it will serve. A connector’s shape can help identify what fits; it does not prove the cable’s data, video, or power capabilities.
Identify a cable in three passes
- Inspect both ends. Note each connector’s shape and size, contact or pin arrangement, and whether it is a plug or receptacle. Check whether the ends match, then compare them with the connector used by the device. Connector families can have multiple sizes: HDMI, for example, includes Standard HDMI Type A and the smaller Type D.
- Read every marking. Check the cable jacket, connector housing, attached tag, and packaging. Record the maker and model, cable family, certification marks, voltage or temperature ratings, wire gauge, data rate, and power rating wherever shown.
- Verify the specification. Look up the exact cable family in the organization’s official guidance or certification lookup, if available, and check the device maker’s documentation for the capability you need. Match the cable to that requirement rather than relying on appearance.
What cable markings can tell you
USB-C: power and data capability
USB-IF’s USB-C to USB-C Cable Logo Requirements say cables in its compliance program must display a power capability marking of 60 W or 240 W. Most cable categories must also indicate their supported data rate. The stated exception is High-Speed USB (USB 2.0) USB-C to USB-C cables: they require the power icon, while a data logo is optional. The USB-C connector shape alone does not establish either the data rate or power capability.
HDMI: cable category and certification
HDMI Licensing Administrator says HDMI cable products must carry their official cable name on the jacket; packaging must show the cable name logo and/or the appropriate certification label. Its HDMI cable overview lists Standard, High Speed, Premium High Speed, Ultra High Speed, and Ultra96 categories. The page describes performance targets of up to 18 Gbps for Premium High Speed, 48 Gbps for Ultra High Speed, and 96 Gbps for Ultra96. These are category claims, not measurements of an unidentified cable.
For Premium High Speed HDMI cables, the certification program says participating cables are tested for full 18 Gbps bandwidth and EMI performance. Verification uses an authentication label and QR code. Certification testing covers each length of each model line at an authorized test center, with regular audits. A label or QR code is useful only when it can be checked against the program’s verification process.
#1 Best Overall
- VERSATILE CABLE TESTING: Cable tester for data (RJ45) terminated cables and patch cords, ensuring comprehensive testing capabilities
- LARGE BACKLIT LCD: Backlit LCD display enables easy reading of pin-to-pin wiremap results, even in low-lit areas
- COMPREHENSIVE FAULT DETECTION: Test for Open, Short, Miswire, Split-Pair faults, Cross-over, and Shield, providing thorough fault detection
- INTUITIVE USER INTERFACE: User-friendly interface with three buttons and simple, easy-to-identify test responses, ensuring a smooth testing experience
- MULTIPLE TONE GENERATOR STYLES: Tone on a single wire, wire pair, or all 8 conductor wires using the multiple style tone generator (solid/warble); requires probe Cat. No. VDV500-123 (sold separately)
Installation wire and cable: ratings and intended use
For wire used in an installation, markings can identify UL evaluation status, ratings, intended uses, and limitations. Consult the markings and the applicable UL Solutions wire and cable guidance to assess suitability. UL’s guide supplements product-category information and the applicable electrical code; it does not replace them. Do not choose installation wire by connector or jacket appearance alone.
Compare cables by the capability you need
When several cables appear to fit, compare the criteria that matter for that cable family and use:
Rank #2
- VERSATILE CABLE TESTING: Cable tester tests voice (RJ11/12), data (RJ45), and video (coax F-connector) terminated cables, providing clear results for comprehensive testing on unenergized Ethernet cables (not designed to test PoE)
- EXTENDED CABLE LENGTH MEASUREMENT: Measure cable length up to 2000 feet (610 m), allowing for precise cable length determination
- COMPREHENSIVE FAULT DETECTION: Test for Open, Short, Miswire, or Split-Pair faults, ensuring thorough fault detection and identification
- BACKLIT LCD DISPLAY: Backlit LCD screen displays cable length, wiremap, cable ID, and test results, ensuring easy readability in various lighting conditions
- EFFICIENT CABLE TRACING: Trace cables, wire pairs, and individual conductor wires using the multiple style tone generator (requires analog probe Cat. No. VDV500-123, sold separately), simplifying cable tracing tasks
- Physical compatibility: connector type, size, ends, and whether each end is a plug or receptacle.
- Function or protocol: confirm the cable supports the kind of connection your devices require.
- Signal performance: check the data rate or video category needed, using the cable’s markings and official specification.
- Power or electrical ratings: match the marked power capability, voltage, temperature, and other relevant ratings to the intended use.
- Length and certification: check the required length and any applicable certification. For installation wire, also compare conductor and insulation markings, intended use, and applicable requirements.
There is no universal “best cable” ranking: the right comparison depends on the cable family and the job it must do.
What to do when a cable has no clear markings
Look for a readable manufacturer or model number on the cable, connector housing, tag, or packaging, then consult the maker’s documentation and the connected devices’ specifications. For installation wire, use the marked ratings and product-category information. If you cannot establish a reliable identity or capability, treat it as unknown rather than inferring performance from the connector. There is no single universal identification method for every unmarked cable.
Rank #3
- Automatically runs all tests and checks for continuity, open, shorted and crossed wire pairs. Visible LED status display.
- Cable state testing (2-wire): Line DC detecting, anode and cathode determination,Ringing signal detecting open, short and cross circuit testing
- Cable Type: RJ11 Telephone cable and RJ45 LAN cable
- Connectors: Ethernet Cat 5, Ethernet Cat 5e, Ethernet Cat 6, Ethernet Cat 7, RJ11 6P and RJ45 8P
- Power Source: DC9V Battery Required (not included)
Use extra care with mains wiring
For cables used in mains electrical installations, visual identification is not enough to establish suitability. Rely on the marked ratings, product-category guidance, and applicable installation requirements for the specific context.
