It adds a colored ring around the pointer; you can also enlarge or recolor the pointer separately.
Turn on mouse cursor highlighting

Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen to open the system menu. You can also press Alt + Shift + s.

Select Settings (the gear), then choose Accessibility.

Open Cursor and touchpad and turn on the mouse cursor highlight option.

If you do not see the option, use the search field in ChromeOS Settings and type cursor. Menu labels and placement can change between ChromeOS updates. Make sure you are in Chromebook system Settings, not the settings for the Chrome browser. Google’s Chromebook accessibility instructions provide the current documented route.
Choose the cursor control that matches what you need
ChromeOS has several related accessibility controls, but they make different things easier to see:

The mouse highlight, pointer size, and pointer color options are in the mouse and touchpad accessibility area. Text-cursor and keyboard-focus highlighting are separate controls under keyboard and text-input accessibility settings. Google’s accessibility settings guide lists these features.
Make the pointer easier to follow
If the colored ring is not enough, turn on the large mouse cursor or select a cursor color in the same general accessibility settings area. These controls can be used alongside highlighting; choose the combination that is easiest for you to see.

If the setting is missing or unavailable

Confirm that you opened ChromeOS Settings, rather than the Chrome browser’s settings, and search Settings for cursor.

If this is a school- or workplace-managed Chromebook, an administrator may manage some settings. Whether you can change a particular option depends on the device’s management configuration.

Use Google’s current Chromebook Help instructions rather than older guides that specify a ChromeOS version threshold or outdated menu names.
Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education documentation describes the mouse highlight as a colored focus ring for better screen visibility and documents cursor-size controls on ChromeOS devices: Set Chrome policies for users or browsers.
