To stop followers from seeing what you play, turn off Listening activity in Spotify’s privacy settings. For a temporary pause, enable Private Session; it ends after six hours or when Spotify restarts. The controls are separate from settings for your public playlists and other profile details.
Turn off Listening activity to stop sharing
Spotify’s Listening activity control determines whether your listening is shared to followers’ Friend Activity feed. You can also use Spotify’s Who can see your activity control, where available, to choose an audience rather than turn sharing off entirely. Menu names and locations can vary by app version.
On a phone or tablet
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Tap Privacy and social.
- Turn Listening activity off. If you want to limit rather than stop sharing, look for Who can see your activity and choose the available audience options.
Spotify’s Privacy and social controls page describes these settings and notes that some friend-selection options may require the mobile app.
On a computer
- Click your profile picture.
- Open Settings.
- Under Social or the Listening Activity and insights controls, switch off Listening activity. Labels can differ between versions.
Spotify documents this control in its Listening Activity help page. Changes may not appear to other people in real time.

Use Private Session for temporary privacy
A Private Session is useful when you want a temporary pause without changing your ongoing sharing preference. On mobile, open Profile picture > Settings and privacy > Privacy and social, then turn on Private Session. On desktop, open the profile menu and select Private session; the exact menu placement may vary.
Spotify says a Private Session keeps that listening out of Friends Activity, prevents recently played artists from updating on your profile, and keeps the session’s listening from affecting recommendations or Wrapped. It applies across devices on the account, including connected TVs and speakers. Spotify’s Private listening instructions explain the feature.

How long does it last?
Spotify says Private Session ends after six hours or when the app is restarted. You can also turn it off manually sooner. If you need privacy for longer, check that it is still active after a restart or once six hours have passed.
What these settings do not change
Hiding Listening activity does not automatically change every other social or profile setting. Spotify lists recently played artists, followers and following, public playlists, and whether playlists appear on your profile as separate controls in Privacy and social controls. Review those settings individually if you also want to limit that information.

Private Session affects listening while it is active; Spotify’s documentation does not say it erases account history or changes information already held by other users. Also, Spotify notes that some sharing defaults differ by age: selected controls default on for adults 18 or older and off for users under 18. Spotify advises users under 18 to consult a guardian before changing settings.

Spotify says Listening Activity may not update in real time, so a brief delay does not necessarily mean the setting failed. If the control appears stale, Spotify recommends checking for app and operating-system updates, restarting Spotify, logging out and back in, or reinstalling the app. See its Listening Activity troubleshooting guidance.
