To hide a seam between 3D-printed parts, first make a strong, aligned joint with a material-compatible adhesive and let it cure. Then sand down high spots, apply automotive body filler in thin layers to shallow exterior gaps, sand it flush, and use a light coat of primer to reveal any remaining defects before painting. Filler smooths the surface; it does not replace structural bonding.
How to fill and hide a seam
- Align and bond the parts. Choose an adhesive suited to the print material and joint, then allow it to cure according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Formlabs generally recommends plastic-compatible epoxy for large parts, cyanoacrylate (CA) for small or medium parts, and resin for small parts when it can be cured with a 405 nm light source. These are general recommendations, not a compatibility guarantee for every filament, resin, or product. See Formlabs’ post-processing FAQs.
- Inspect and lightly sand the seam. Remove high spots and rough edges without grinding away so much plastic that the repair area grows. Prusa recommends rough sanding before deciding whether the joint needs more material; see its post-processing guide.
- Apply filler to shallow exterior gaps. Spread automotive body filler in a thin layer over the seam. Formlabs names Bondo 907 as an example; Prusa also recommends thin applications of automotive filler. Let each layer dry as directed before sanding, and repeat only where gaps remain. - Sand the repair flush. Formlabs gives approximately 150-grit dry sanding as an example for leveling edges and removing larger marks, followed by approximately 320-grit wet sanding to refine the surface. Treat these as starting points, not a fixed prescription: filler, print material, geometry, and finish all affect the right progression.
- Remove dust and prime lightly. Clean away sanding dust, then apply a thin primer coat. Primer can expose small defects and may help with tiny cracks or holes; if it reveals a remaining gap, rework that area and reprime. Heavy coats can obscure small details. - Paint when the surface is ready. Follow the instructions for the specific filler, adhesive, primer, and paint, including cure times, material compatibility, ventilation, and protective equipment.
Choose a repair method for the seam
The right approach depends on the gap and the job the joint must do. A cosmetic surface repair and a structural bond solve different problems.

What to check before using filler or adhesive
- Material compatibility: No single filler or adhesive is established as suitable for every filament and photopolymer resin. Check the product and print-material manufacturers’ instructions; test an inconspicuous area if compatibility is uncertain.
- Gap size and depth: The cited filler guidance supports thin layers for slight exterior voids. It does not establish body filler as the right choice for every large gap or structural defect.
- Working time and finish: Consider cure time, sanding effort, surface detail, and whether the piece will be painted when choosing a product and workflow.
- Safe handling: Follow product labels for ventilation and protective equipment. Formlabs calls for gloves and eye protection when handling uncured resin; use the precautions specified for fillers, paints, solvents, and sprays as well.
