On a compatible Galaxy phone, select the photos or videos in Samsung Gallery, tap More options, then choose Move to private album and confirm Move. To view them later, open Gallery’s menu, tap Private album, and unlock it with your phone’s screen lock. If that option is missing, use Samsung Secure Folder instead.
Move photos or videos to Private album
- Open Gallery and go to Pictures or Albums.
- Select a photo or video. Select additional items if you want to move more than one.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu). Depending on the device, it may appear at the top or bottom of the screen.
- Tap Move to private album, then confirm by tapping Move.
- To open the items later, open Gallery’s menu, choose Private album, and authenticate with your screen lock.
Samsung says Private album hides moved media from the main Gallery and apps that access media. Access is protected by the device security lock; Samsung India also says screenshots are disabled inside Private album. The exact screens and labels can vary by model, carrier, and software version, as Samsung notes in its Gallery guidance.
Check whether your Galaxy supports Private album
Private album is not available on every Galaxy phone. Samsung India identifies it as available on select Galaxy devices with One UI 8.5, while Samsung Colombia specifies selected devices running Android 16 and One UI 8.5 or later. Samsung warns that functions can vary by model, software version, and carrier, and its support pages do not provide a complete model-by-model rollout list. Check your phone’s Gallery menu and software details rather than assuming the feature is available.
If Gallery does not show Move to private album, Samsung points users to Secure Folder. It provides a separate protected space for content such as photos and contacts, including when the phone itself is unlocked. Follow the setup prompts on your own device, since availability and labels may differ.

Hide an album from Gallery’s list
Hiding an album is a separate, less protective option. It removes the album from Gallery’s Albums list; it does not delete the photos, and other apps may still show them. Use it to tidy the Gallery view or for casual concealment, not as a security boundary.
- Open Gallery and go to Albums.
- Tap More options and choose Hide albums. Some versions may require opening the full album list first.
- Toggle the album you want to hide. To show it again, return to Hide albums and turn its toggle back on.
Samsung documents this flow for regional Galaxy variants and cautions that international devices may need their local Samsung support site. Its Japan guidance makes clear that hiding an album only changes its Gallery visibility; Secure Folder is the better fit when you need a separate protected space.

Choose the right option for what you need

Samsung feature descriptions support these differences in scope and access, but they do not establish that any option prevents every possible way of viewing or copying media.
