To hide a cookie banner in a PhantomJS screenshot, wait until the page has loaded, remove or hide the target site’s verified banner element with page.evaluate(), then call page.render(). There is no universal selector: inspect the page and replace the example selector below with one that matches the specific banner.
Remove a banner before rendering
PhantomJS lets a script run in the page context with page.evaluate(), and render the page with page.render(). The sequence matters: make the DOM change before capturing the image.
var page = require('webpage').create();
page.open('https://example.com/', function (status) {
if (status !== 'success') {
console.log('Unable to access page');
phantom.exit(1);
return;
}
var removed = page.evaluate(function () {
var banner = document.querySelector('#your-verified-banner-selector');
if (!banner) {
return false;
}
banner.parentNode.removeChild(banner);
return true;
});
console.log('Banner removed: ' + removed);
page.render('page.png');
phantom.exit();
});
This is an illustrative pattern based on PhantomJS’s documented page automation APIs, not a tested script. Change the URL and selector for your target page. The removed result helps distinguish a selector miss from a successful removal.
Find and verify the selector
- Open the target site and inspect the banner in the browser’s developer tools.
- Choose a selector specific enough to target the banner rather than unrelated page content. For example, use a verified ID or class, not a broad selector such as
div. - Check that the selector matches the intended element on each site you automate. Banner markup and selectors vary between sites.
- Run the script and check the logged result. If it reports
false, the element was not present when the evaluation ran or the selector did not match.
Remove the element or hide it
Removing the node with parentNode.removeChild() can also remove the space it occupied. If the site’s own scripts expect the element to remain in the DOM, use a narrowly targeted inline style instead. Hiding can leave a gap, depending on the site’s markup and layout.
var hidden = page.evaluate(function () {
var banner = document.querySelector('#your-verified-banner-selector');
if (!banner) {
return false;
}
banner.style.display = 'none';
return true;
});
Handle banners inserted after page load
The example evaluates the DOM as soon as page.open reports success. A site may insert its banner asynchronously, so the element might not exist yet. In that case, wait for a target-specific condition or use a deliberate delay before evaluating and rendering. There is no universal delay that can be recommended for every site; choose and verify timing for the pages you capture.
Whichever approach you use, keep the order explicit: wait for the banner if necessary, change the DOM, and only then render. Rendering first can capture the banner before the change takes effect.
Visual removal is not cookie consent
Removing or hiding a DOM element changes what appears in that page’s screenshot. It does not, by itself, accept consent or establish a site’s recorded consent state. PhantomJS’s cookie APIs concern browser cookies; changing cookies is a separate operation and is not proof that an already-rendered banner disappeared. Use cookie handling when testing browser state, and DOM manipulation when the immediate goal is visual cleanup.
A screenshot alone does not establish a consent choice. The technical sources cited here do not determine legal requirements for a particular site or jurisdiction.

What to check when it does not work
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
The script logs Banner removed: false. |
The selector is wrong, or the banner has not been inserted yet. | Verify the selector against the target page’s DOM. If the site creates the banner asynchronously, wait for a target-specific condition or delay before evaluating. |
| The screenshot still shows the banner. | The DOM change ran too late, targeted the wrong node, or rendering happened before the change. | Confirm the selector and ensure evaluation completes before page.render(). |
| The banner disappears but leaves a blank area. | Hiding retained the element’s layout space, or the page has other layout rules reserving space. | Try removing the verified banner node instead, or inspect the page’s markup and layout to identify the element responsible for the gap. |
| Removing the node breaks page behavior. | The site’s scripts may expect the banner element to remain present. | Use a narrowly scoped style such as display: none rather than deleting the node, then verify the rendered result. |
| The page fails to open. | page.open() did not return success. |
Check the target URL and page access. The example exits with an error instead of trying to render a failed load. |
PhantomJS is a legacy choice
PhantomJS’s official homepage says, “PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice.” Its documentation still covers page automation and screen capture, so this technique is most appropriate for maintaining an existing PhantomJS workflow. The available evidence does not establish how well it handles modern sites generally.
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot API instead of maintaining a PhantomJS script, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request capture and can remove supported cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Frequently Asked Questions
Can one PhantomJS selector work for every website?
No. Cookie-banner markup varies by site, so verify a selector for each target.
Does removing a banner accept cookies?
No. Removing the DOM element changes the screenshot appearance; it does not establish or record consent.
