The most useful ways to help penguins are to avoid disturbing them, reduce hazards near their habitat, follow local wildlife rules, and support credible conservation work. The right response depends on the species and location: keep your distance, keep pets away, and contact local trained responders—not a general hotline—if a penguin is clearly injured or in immediate danger.
How to behave around penguins and their habitat
Penguins are vulnerable on land, particularly while nesting or moulting. Keep clear of birds, nests, burrows, and the routes penguins use to reach the sea. Do not approach, pursue, crowd, or try to make a penguin move for a photograph.
New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) advises: “Leave penguins alone. Usually scruffy birds are simply moulting.” A ragged appearance during moulting is not, by itself, evidence that a bird needs help. DOC also warns that disturbance can threaten nesting penguins. DOC penguin guidance
Keep dogs and other pets away
Keep dogs well away from penguin habitat and nests. Where dogs are permitted, follow leash requirements; some sensitive sites may prohibit them altogether. Rules vary by place, so check signs and local wildlife guidance before visiting. DOC highlights dogs as a risk to hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins), including during moulting. DOC penguin guidance

Reduce litter and fishing hazards
Put rubbish in bins and take your waste with you. Discarded fishing line and hooks can injure coastal wildlife. New South Wales guidance specifically identifies these as hazards for Manly’s little penguins. Remove line or hooks only if it is safe and lawful to do so; do not approach a penguin to remove something from it. NSW penguin guidance
Boat carefully and use managed viewing areas
Penguins may surface unexpectedly, sometimes in groups. If boating near a colony, slow down and follow local boating and wildlife rules. At viewing sites, use designated areas and obey instructions. Ōamaru Penguins describes visitor education and well-managed tourism as part of its conservation approach. Ōamaru Penguins

What to do if you find a sick, injured, or dead penguin
For a live bird
- Do not feed or handle it. A penguin that looks scruffy may simply be moulting, and seabird rehabilitation requires specialist knowledge.
- If it is clearly injured or in immediate danger, contact the wildlife authority or trained rescue organization for your location. Give the bird’s location and describe what you observed; follow the responder’s directions.
- Do not rely on a contact number from another region. DOC provides New Zealand-specific advice, while NSW has separate local rescue contacts. DOC guidance; NSW guidance
For a dead bird
Leave it where it is unless local authorities instruct you otherwise. DOC notes that community groups may count dead seabirds, so moving one can interfere with that work. DOC penguin guidance

Choose work relevant to the species and place
Penguin threats differ among species and colonies. DOC lists habitat degradation, predators, fisheries bycatch, discarded nylon fishing line, climate-related changes to food availability, and nesting disturbance among threats affecting penguins in New Zealand. Its hoiho guidance also discusses disease, starvation, dog attacks during moulting, and incidental capture in set nets. These examples should not be read as a claim that every threat affects every colony. DOC penguin guidance; DOC hoiho guidance
