Stay on established boardwalks or gravel tracks, avoid kauri roots, use every hygiene station and follow its signs, and respect closures and rāhui. Before you go, check the track manager’s current notices: access and hygiene requirements can vary by place and change over time.
Why track hygiene matters
Kauri dieback is caused by Phytophthora agathidicida (PA), a soil-borne pathogen that infects kauri through their roots. It can impair the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients. Soil carried on footwear or equipment can move the pathogen, so the aim is to limit contact with forest soil and follow the cleaning rules—not to assume any single action guarantees a disease-free forest.
Kauri roots extend well beyond the trunk. Tiakina Kauri visitor guidance says the root zone reaches outward about three times the radius of the tree canopy. What to do before and during your walk
Check whether the track is open
Before setting out, check the latest information from the track’s landowner or manager. A closure may protect kauri, allow track or hygiene-station work, or reduce mud movement in wet weather. Choose the durable route and stay on it
Use established wooden boardwalks, gravel tracks, or gravel roads, and do not step onto forest soil or approach kauri roots. Avoid shortcuts around muddy patches or leaving the path to get closer to a tree. The safer route is the one that keeps your footwear off forest soil and is currently open.
Use every hygiene station
Use every station you encounter and follow the instructions displayed there. Rule 9 of New Zealand’s National Plan requires visitors to use all hygiene stations encountered. The Department of Conservation (DOC) report on prototype stations described their intended steps as “brush, inspect and disinfect.” In practice, use the equipment provided and complete the posted sequence; brushing removes visible material but should not be treated as disinfection on its own. If your route involves touching the forest floor
Rule 8 of the National Plan addresses cleaning items that contact the ground when going off-track or onto a route where you will touch the forest floor. Clean visible soil and organic matter from footwear and relevant equipment before entry and again when leaving, as required by the rules and any instructions at the site. A brush can help remove mud from boot treads, but it does not replace a hygiene station, posted instructions, or disinfection where prescribed. Official guidance does not establish that a consumer brush kills PA or makes footwear pathogen-free.

DOC’s 2018 report observed behavior at prototype stations at seven locations between June and September 2018. More than 90% of users did something to clean their footwear. Depending on the location, 3% to 64% followed the study’s definition of correct compliance; that figure was 72% to 95% when partial compliance was included. These are historical observations of station use, not a current national compliance estimate.

The report also said the stations’ effectiveness at cleaning boots had not been field tested. The figures therefore do not show that station use eliminated PA.
