Start by finding the exact point where homework goes missing: recording it, understanding it, starting or finishing it, packing it, bringing it to school, or submitting it. Work with the student and teacher to identify that step, then build a small routine around it. A missed assignment is a reason to investigate the process—not proof that a student is lazy or has a particular diagnosis.

Find where the homework process breaks down

Ask the student to walk you through one recent missed assignment, step by step. Keep the conversation curious rather than accusatory:

  • Was the assignment recorded, and could the student find the directions later?
  • Were the directions clear? Did the student know how to begin?
  • Was there enough time and a suitable place to work?
  • Was the work completed, put in the right folder, and packed?
  • Could the student find it at school and submit it in the expected way?

These are separate steps. A student may finish an assignment but forget to pack it, bring it to school, find it in a bag, or hand it in. Understood describes this distinction in “Why kids don’t hand in their work (even if they did it)”.

Notice whether the problem is limited to one subject or type of assignment, or also appears with other tasks and in other settings. Planning, tracking time, keeping directions in mind, switching activities, sustaining attention, and organizing materials can all add demands. Understood explains how challenges with routines and schedules can involve several of these executive-function skills in “Why kids have trouble following a routine or schedule.” The pattern can help you and the teacher choose what to try, but missing homework alone does not identify its cause.

Build a simple homework routine together

Choose a routine that targets the step that is failing. Keep it short enough for the student to use consistently, and make each action visible rather than relying on reminders to “remember everything.” Understood recommends tools such as assignment notebooks, task lists, visual schedules, and organized folders in its guidance on classroom accommodations for executive-function challenges.

  1. Record: Use one assignment record—the system the school requires, a paper notebook, or a digital calendar. Record the work and any due date or directions the student needs.
  2. Review: At a predictable time, check the record together and choose the first task. A brief daily check is usually easier to maintain than a complicated set of reminders.
  3. Work: Use a short checklist for the student’s actual sticking points, such as “read directions, get materials, do the first part.” Give specific directions and make routines visible; Understood discusses these supports in its article on routines and schedules.
  4. Pack: Put completed work in the correct homework folder or subject section, then place it in the backpack. A folder or binder can make papers easier to keep together.
  5. Submit: Clarify what handing in the work means at that school—for example, placing a paper in a collection tray or submitting a file online—and add that action to the routine if needed.

A student assignment planner or homework notebook can help if the student can carry it and check it. A digital calendar may fit better when the school already posts work online or reminders are useful. Neither format is established as best for every student; choose by school compatibility, ease of use, visibility, portability, privacy, and the student’s growing independence. The options are discussed in Understood’s guidance on remembering to hand in homework.

For a long project, agree on smaller milestones and dates instead of treating the final deadline as the only checkpoint. If directions are confusing, ask whether the teacher can provide them both orally and in writing, check that the student understands them, or share an outline or rubric. Understood discusses chunking and concrete directions in its guidance on executive-function accommodations and classroom accommodations for ADHD.

Coordinate with the teacher

Share one or two specific examples and ask where the teacher sees the process breaking down. Compare what happens in class with what happens at home rather than assuming the student is having the same difficulty in both places. Understood’s teacher-conversation guidance recommends sharing what you observe and discussing strategies with the school.

Clarify the practical details together:

  • Where and how are assignments posted or given?
  • Where should students record them, and what counts as turning work in?
  • Would a brief check-in or another specific support be workable?
  • Which organizational strategies have helped at home, and which can be used in class?

If the student already has an IEP or a Section 504 plan, discuss the relevant accommodations with the teacher and school team; do not assume each teacher is familiar with every part of the plan.

Choose tools for the actual failure point

A tool is useful only if it fits the student’s school system and the step that is going wrong. Compare the options on these practical criteria:

When to ask for more support

If missing work persists despite a routine, or disorganization appears across tasks and settings, compare observations with the teacher and ask the school’s support staff what might help clarify the problem. Child Mind Institute advises looking at whether difficulties also appear at school and notes that anxiety, depression, or a learning disability can contribute to apparent executive-function problems; an evaluation may help clarify causes and supports in “Signs of Executive Dysfunction in Kids.”

Missing homework by itself does not diagnose ADHD, a learning disorder, or a mental-health condition. A health professional can help assess persistent concerns alongside the school team. The Institute of Education Sciences’ 2017 working paper, “Executive Function: Implications for Education”, describes executive-function skills as supporting attention, keeping goals and information in mind, resisting distraction, tolerating frustration, and planning. Those skills offer a way to understand possible demands on a student, not a diagnosis based on one behavior.
