If your older dog is waking, pacing, or wandering at night, canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) may be one explanation—but nighttime restlessness alone does not diagnose dementia. Start with a veterinary check to look for pain, illness, or sensory changes, then make the home safer and the day-night routine more predictable. These steps can reduce confusion and risk, but no home adjustment guarantees uninterrupted sleep or cures CDS.
Why is my old dog up all night?
Nighttime wandering and sleeping more during the day can occur with CDS, a condition associated with gradual age-related changes in the brain. Other possible signs include disorientation, altered social behavior, house-soiling, anxiety, restlessness, and changes in learning. Cornell’s CDS guidance, last updated October 21, 2025, emphasizes that diagnosis is based on clinical signs and requires consideration of other causes.
Pain, arthritis, seizure disorders, systemic illness, and loss of vision or hearing can also change a dog’s behavior or sleep. A veterinarian may examine your dog and recommend blood or urine tests to investigate these possibilities. If house-soiling is new, arrange a check rather than assuming it is dementia; Cornell specifically notes that a bladder infection should be ruled out.
Sudden balance problems are not typical dementia-related insomnia. Cornell’s senior dog dementia guidance describes sudden balance trouble, head tilt, circling, inability to stand, nausea, or rapid repetitive eye movements as signs associated with vestibular syndrome, a distinct condition. Seek veterinary assessment if these appear.

How do I make nighttime safer and less confusing?
Keep the dog’s bed, furniture, and food and water bowls in familiar places, and keep meals and walks on a predictable schedule. Cornell recommends low-level night-lights on familiar routes; a plug-in LED night-light can help with orientation, but it is not a treatment for CDS.
- Block hazards: Use a barrier to keep your dog away from stairs or places where they could fall, become trapped, or wander into danger.
- Make toileting accessible: Keep a clear route to a safe toileting area, taking mobility into account.
- Support footing if needed: If your dog has mobility limitations, non-slip runners or mats may help with traction, provided they lie flat and do not obstruct the route.
- Respond calmly: Do not punish pacing, confusion, or accidents. Merck recommends reinforcement-based handling and avoiding positive punishment for dogs with CDS.
These environmental measures are consistent with recommendations from Cornell and the Merck Veterinary Manual. Choose barriers and floor coverings to suit your home layout, your dog’s mobility, and their access to water and toileting.

How can I support a healthier day-night rhythm?
Merck recommends daytime interaction and light exposure, a consistent place and time for sleep, and a darker room at night. Keep activity appropriate for your dog’s comfort and mobility; a tiring routine is not helpful if it causes pain or distress.
A calm walk immediately before bedtime helps some dogs sleep longer, according to Cornell. It is an individual possibility, not a guaranteed fix. Adjust the walk to your dog’s ability and usual schedule.

Can I give my dog melatonin or other treatment?
Discuss medication and supplements with your veterinarian rather than trying a dose or a human sleep product. Cornell says melatonin may help some dogs, but few studies confirm its effects. Do not combine supplements with medication unless your veterinarian directs you to do so.
There is no single cure for CDS. A veterinarian may tailor care to include treatment of concurrent conditions, enrichment and exercise, a therapeutic diet, or medication. Cornell identifies selegiline as a medication approved for CDS treatment in North America. Some owners report improvement in three weeks or less, while many dogs may take six weeks, according to Cornell’s senior-dog guidance; these are not guarantees that a particular dog will respond. Ask the veterinarian what change to monitor and when to follow up.

Nutrition may be part of a broader plan, not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment of pain and other disease. Cornell discusses prescription cognitive-support diets and nutrients including antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and medium-chain triglycerides, while noting that studies on supplements in senior dogs are few. VCA advises addressing pain or systemic disease first and reviewing food with a veterinarian after CDS is confirmed. VCA reports that nutrition combined with environmental enrichment was more effective than nutrition alone.
