To have an Android phone read an article aloud, use Reading mode for supported long-form content in websites or apps, or Chrome’s Listen to this page for a supported web page. If you want text from other parts of the screen read aloud, try Select to Speak.
Choose the feature that fits what you want to read

Use Reading mode for a long article
Reading mode is available for Android phones running Android 9 or later. Install it from Google Play, then enable its accessibility shortcut. The exact shortcut options and setup screens can vary by phone.
- Install Reading mode from Google Play.
- Open the app and follow its setup prompts to Android’s Accessibility settings.
- Enable the Reading mode shortcut and grant the requested permissions. Depending on the phone and setup, you may be able to use a floating button, hold the volume keys, or use a gesture.
- Open a supported article in a website or app, activate Reading mode with your chosen shortcut, and tap the play button.
- To change the narration, open Reading mode’s audio settings and adjust the voice or reading speed.
Reading mode does not read PDFs, email, chat messages, or social media feeds. If audio does not work, Google recommends updating Reading mode and installing or updating Speech Services by Google.
Use Chrome’s Listen to this page feature
For an article open in Chrome on Android, use the browser’s built-in playback when it is available:

- Open the web page in Chrome.
- Tap the three-dot menu and choose Listen to this page.
- Use the player to play or pause, rewind or fast-forward, and adjust playback speed. In standard playback, you can also choose a voice and turn text highlighting or auto-scroll on or off.
Playback can continue while you browse other tabs or lock the screen. If Listen to this page is missing from the menu, Google says that page is not available for playback.
Standard playback and AI playback
Standard playback reads the page aloud. Google lists support for Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Malayalam, Marathi, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.
