Use OCRmyPDF with Tesseract to add searchable text to scanned invoice PDFs in Python. That gives you a PDF whose text can be selected and searched; it does not, by itself, reliably produce structured fields such as invoice number, supplier, dates, totals, or line items. For those, add a separate extraction and validation stage.
What OCR does—and what it does not do
A PDF may contain page images, digital text, or a mixture. Tesseract recognizes text from images; OCRmyPDF coordinates PDF processing and integrates recognized text into the PDF. Its documented workflow renders pages as needed, runs OCR, and adds the resulting text layer while preserving the PDF as a PDF. See the OCRmyPDF introduction and stable workflow documentation.
The result is useful when a person or downstream tool needs to search or copy text from a scanned invoice. It is not automatically a structured accounting record: OCR text can be wrong, and recognizing the words does not determine which number is the invoice total or which date is the due date. Keep searchable-PDF creation separate from invoice-field extraction.
Prepare the Python environment and invoice samples
Inspect the PDFs first
Check representative documents to see whether they are image-only scans, born-digital PDFs with usable text, or hybrids. This distinction helps you determine what needs OCR and whether existing text is already available. OCRmyPDF is designed to work with scanned and born-digital content, but inspect outputs rather than assuming every input needs identical treatment.

Install OCRmyPDF and its dependencies
OCRmyPDF is a Python application and library, but the workflow also relies on external programs, including Tesseract and a PDF rasterizer such as Ghostscript. Installation differs by platform and deployment environment, so follow the project’s current installation and dependency guidance rather than assuming a Python package install alone is sufficient.
Install Tesseract language data that matches the invoices you process. A missing or mismatched language model can undermine recognition even when the PDF processing completes successfully. Confirm the installed programs and language support in the same environment where the workflow will run.

Run OCRmyPDF on a scanned invoice
Once OCRmyPDF and its system dependencies are installed, pass an input PDF and an output path to the command-line application:
ocrmypdf input-invoice.pdf searchable-invoice.pdfThis creates an output PDF with an OCR text layer where needed. Use the current OCRmyPDF documentation for options supported by your installed version and rasterizer. In version 17 documentation, pypdfium2 is described as an alternative to Ghostscript for rendering.

If the page is rotated or crooked, OCRmyPDF offers image-processing features such as rotation correction and deskewing. Those can help make text more legible to the OCR engine, but they do not guarantee correct recognition of financial values. Choose and configure rendering and preprocessing based on representative invoices, then inspect the resulting pages.
Verify the searchable PDF before using its text
- Open the output PDF in a PDF viewer and try selecting text or searching for a visible word. This confirms that the PDF has a usable text layer.
- Compare recognized text with the page image. Check key values such as invoice number, date, supplier name, currency, and total. OCR can misread characters or omit content, so do not treat the text layer as authoritative.
- Repeat across a representative sample. Include the languages, orientations, image quality, and supplier layouts expected in production before relying on any automation.
Tesseract’s FAQ also describes searchable PDF output as a hidden OCR text layer. Searchability is a format capability, not evidence that every recognized word or amount is correct.

Extract invoice fields as a separate step
For structured output, build a second stage that interprets OCR text and, where needed, page layout or position. Define the fields your application requires, such as supplier, invoice number, invoice and due dates, currency, tax, total, and line items. Invoice layouts vary, so an extraction method that works on one supplier’s template may fail on another.
- Validate required fields and data formats.
- Check arithmetic relationships, such as whether line amounts and taxes reconcile with the stated total, where the document provides enough information.
- Route missing, conflicting, or uncertain values to human review instead of silently accepting them.
- Measure field-level performance on your own representative invoices before setting confidence thresholds or automating accounting decisions.
A 2022 OCRMiner paper reported data recovery of 90% for its English set and 88% for its Czech set using its system, which combined open-source OCR with text analysis and layout features. Those figures describe that method and those datasets; they are not accuracy guarantees for OCRmyPDF, Tesseract alone, or another invoice collection. The paper is useful as an example of combining text and layout for extraction, not as a universal benchmark: OCRMiner paper.

When to use OCRmyPDF or a lower-level pipeline

If your main deliverable is searchable PDFs, OCRmyPDF is a practical starting point because it handles PDF-page processing rather than leaving all orchestration to application code. If your main deliverable is reliable invoice data, compare extraction approaches by field coverage, layout variation, review and correction workflow, deployment requirements, and measured performance on your own documents.
