Use Steam’s current IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews endpoint, pass its settings inside input_json, and carry the returned cursor into each next request. For a traversal that can finish naturally, choose the Recent or Updated filter and stop when the response’s reviews list is empty. A Helpful query is ranked and can widen its day window, so it is not a reliable way to export every review.
How do I get all Steam reviews?
Steam’s current endpoint is https://api.steampowered.com/IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews/v1/. Steam documents it as replacing the older store.steampowered.com/appreviews/<appid>?json=1 endpoint. The service parameters go inside input_json, and the endpoint can be called without an API key. Steam’s documentation describes it as: “Gets a page of public reviews for an app.”
For a full chronological traversal, use Recent or Updated, pass the response cursor into each subsequent request, and continue until a response has an empty reviews list. The endpoint returns a page at a time; it does not make a single request that contains every review. The following flow reflects Steam’s documented behavior; it is not a claim of a tested client implementation.
- Choose the app ID and explicitly set the population filters and language scope you need.
- Set
num_per_pageto a value up to 100. It defaults to 20. For the first page, omitcursoror set it to*. - Send a request to the service endpoint with the parameters serialized in
input_json. Check the HTTP status; handle HTTP 429 as rate limiting. The response has nosuccessfield. - Process the page’s
reviews, then use the returned cursor as thecursorfor the next request. URL-encode cursor characters as needed when constructing the request. - Repeat with
RecentorUpdateduntilreviewsis empty. Store the exact request settings with the collected data so its scope can be understood later.
Choose pagination and ordering for the job
The filter setting controls ordering, not sentiment or purchase source. Its choices are Helpful, Recent, Updated, and Funny.

For Helpful, day_range defaults to 30 days, accepts up to 365, and accepts 0 for no limit. It applies only to Helpful. Steam documents use_review_quality as applying only to Helpful as well; disabling quality ranking adds result restrictions described in Steam’s API reference. Do not use the Helpful page stream’s apparent persistence as evidence that you have retrieved all reviews.
Set filters to define the review population
Filters change which records you collect, so they are part of the dataset definition rather than incidental request options. In the service, filter, review_type, and purchase_type use documented enum values.
review_typecan include all reviews, positive reviews, or negative reviews.purchase_typecan include Steam purchases, all purchase sources, or non-Steam purchases. The default is Steam purchases.- Optional paired Unix timestamp bounds can constrain the time period; an exclusion date range can omit a period.
- Other options can constrain playtime at the time of review, primarily Steam Deck play, and review hardware attributes such as operating system, CPU, GPU, or device type.
- Off-topic activity is excluded by default. Set
filter_offtopic_activity=falseto include it. Steam explains its treatment of off-topic periods in its User Reviews guidance.
For example, an English-only collection of Steam-purchased positive reviews is not interchangeable with a collection of all languages, all purchase sources, and all review sentiments. Record filters alongside any export or analysis, especially when comparing datasets.
Choose review language separately from display language
The service parameter is languages (plural). It selects which reviews are returned: an empty list means English, while all requests every language. Use Steam’s documented language codes. Each review also includes its own language code, which is useful for checking the records actually returned.

display_language has a different purpose: it controls the language of review_score_desc and defaults to English. It does not set the language scope of the reviews.
Nor is the request’s language selection the same thing as Steam’s review-score calculation. Steam Support says the score counts reviews from Steam purchases (or all reviews for apps that do not require purchase), excludes reviews from periods classified as off-topic by default, and uses reviews in a player’s language when enough are available; otherwise, it calculates the score using all languages. A language-filtered API response should therefore not be treated as a direct reconstruction of the displayed score.

Interpret the response without assuming every field appears on every page
The response includes a cursor for the next page and total_matching; Helpful queries also return day_range_used. The query_summary score fields appear only on the first page and only when review_type is All. Do not expect those aggregates on later pages or when collecting only positive or negative reviews.
Each review record includes a review ID, author data, text and language, created and updated timestamps, recommendation polarity, votes, purchase and free indicators, playtime fields, and other attributes. Preserve relevant fields and request settings if the result will be used for later analysis; the returned records reflect the filters selected rather than every possible review population.

Rate limits and cached responses
Steam says anonymous responses may be cached for up to 10 minutes. Calls without a key associated with the app share a lower rate limit, and rate-limited calls return HTTP 429. The API reference does not give a numeric rate threshold, so callers should detect the HTTP status and handle throttling rather than rely on an assumed request-per-minute figure.
