If an AI-generated image contains another real person’s signature, don’t erase it to hide who created, endorsed, or originated the image. Get permission from the signer or rights-holder and ask for an authorized clean export. If you are correcting an image with authorization, preserve truthful attribution and any available provenance information.
Why a signature should not be removed without permission
A signature can identify a creator or imply that a person approved or made an image. Removing it without authorization could mislead viewers or interfere with someone else’s rights. Adobe’s US Generative AI Product Specific Terms, dated June 17, 2025, require users to have sufficient rights for protected third-party inputs and prohibit misleading others about the origin of outputs. Those terms also prohibit removing or altering certain watermarks and Content Credentials generated with output. Adobe’s Generative AI User Guidelines separately address impersonation and uses that violate third-party copyright, trademark, privacy, or publicity rights. These are Adobe-specific rules, not a universal legal ruling; what rights apply depends on the image, the people involved, and the relevant law.
What kind of mark are you looking at?
A visible signature, a watermark, and Content Credentials are not interchangeable. A signature or watermark is visible in the image itself. Content Credentials can carry machine-readable information about a file’s origin and history. Editing the visible pixels does not necessarily remove embedded provenance, and an edit, conversion, screenshot, or upload may affect whether provenance information remains available.

OpenAI’s provenance guidance explains that detecting a supported watermark indicates a signal associated with OpenAI; it does not identify the author or owner, establish whether disclosure was required, or determine legal responsibility.

What to do instead
If the signature belongs to someone else
- Ask the signer or rights-holder for written permission before changing the image.
- Request an authorized clean export from the creator rather than altering the marked copy.
- If you cannot get permission, keep the signature intact or do not use the image in a way that could imply false authorship or endorsement.
If you have authorization to correct the image
- Keep a record of the permission and the scope of changes allowed.
- Ask for a clean export where possible. If you must edit, use a workflow that keeps attribution accurate and preserves available Content Credentials.
- Inspect the exported file’s available provenance rather than assuming that a visible mark or its absence tells the whole story.
Adobe describes Content Authenticity as a way for creators to apply attribution and Content Credentials and inspect credentials when available. Whether credentials persist also depends on the tools and platforms involved. Adobe Experience League documentation describes C2PA preservation in supported Adobe enterprise workflows and notes that preservation outside those workflows depends on external platform support: Adobe Experience League documentation.
What provenance checks can and cannot establish
- A detected watermark or credential may provide useful information about a supported signal or file history.
- A successful check does not prove who authored or owns the image, or who has permission to alter it.
- A failed check or missing credential does not prove the image is not AI-generated; editing and platform handling can affect available signals.
- When attribution matters, confirm permission and credits with the creator or rights-holder rather than relying on a technical signal alone.
Adobe’s October 8, 2024 announcement described its Content Authenticity app and reported that 91% of creators in an Adobe study wanted a reliable method to attach attribution to their work; it also reported that 56% were worried about their content being used to train generative AI without consent. These are figures Adobe attributed to its study, not independently verified estimates of all creators. Adobe’s announcement is historical, so its availability statements should not be taken as confirmation of current service status.
