Use the Countries dimension in Search Console’s Search results Performance report to view performance by country. To compare a selection or create a regional total without losing country detail, keep a separate row for each country and add any combined total as an additional analysis—not as a replacement for those rows.

What “group countries” means in Search Console

In the Search results Performance report, the Countries dimension groups data by the country where the search originated. Each country remains a distinct row, so this is the right view when you want to examine several countries while keeping their individual results visible. See Google’s explanation of Performance report dimensions and data groupings.

There is an important difference between grouping by country and combining multiple countries into a single figure. A combined total is useful for a regional overview, but it cannot show how much each country contributed. Keep country-level records and add a separate region label or roll-up if you need both views.

View or compare countries in the Performance report

  1. Open the property in Google Search Console and go to Performance > Search results.
  2. Set the date range and search type you want to analyze. Keep these choices consistent when comparing results.
  3. In the table, select the Countries dimension. The table is now grouped into country-level rows.
  4. To narrow the report, apply a country filter. To compare countries, use the comparison control and select the countries available for the property.
  5. Leave the Countries dimension selected when the output needs to retain a row for each country. A filter can restrict which countries appear; it does not create a new regional taxonomy.

Google’s country-comparison instructions are available in How are you performing on Google?. The choices offered depend on countries for which the property has data.

Export a small, one-off country report

For a quick analysis, export the report while the Countries table and any intended filters or comparisons are displayed. Google says a direct report export reflects the current view, including filters and grouping. However, direct exports are limited to representative rows, with a documented limit of 1,000 rows. Treat this as a convenient report extract, not a guarantee that it contains every underlying record. See Export data directly from a Search Console report.

If you combine country rows into a region after exporting, preserve the original country column and rows. Add a separate region field or a second summary table, and document the rule used to assign countries to regions; Search Console does not supply a built-in business or editorial region definition.

Choose an API or BigQuery for recurring or larger work

Approach Useful for Key limits or behavior
Direct report export A small, one-off extract of the current report view Exports the displayed view, including its filters and grouping; limited to up to 1,000 representative rows. Google export guidance.
Search Console API Automated or customized requests for Performance data Supports filters and aggregation, but not freeform SQL. Performance data is limited to 50,000 rows per day for each property and search type. Google API export guidance.
BigQuery bulk export Recurring analysis and transformations in SQL Exports available Performance data daily. Anonymized queries are excluded; the country field uses ISO-3166-1 alpha-3 codes. Google BigQuery bulk export guidance.

For API requests, retain country as an explicit dimension and record the property, search type, and date range used. The API is not a way to run arbitrary SQL against Search Console; use your own analysis environment for transformations.

For BigQuery, keep the original country code and country-level records. If readers need familiar country names, add a separate display-name field rather than overwriting the code. Regional roll-ups should be an additional result based on a documented country-to-region mapping.

Understand what country-level data does not guarantee

Keeping country rows preserves the reporting dimension; it does not guarantee that every query or underlying record is shown. Google omits anonymized queries from query reporting for privacy, and table data can be truncated. BigQuery bulk export is described as the most complete query list, but it also excludes anonymized queries. These are boundaries on query-level detail, not evidence that selecting Countries collapses country rows. See Google’s table guidelines and reference and Performance report dimensions and data groupings.

As an optional starting point, the Insights report has a Top countries card that can open a selected country in the Performance report. Availability may vary because Google says the report is being introduced gradually. Details are in the Insights report documentation.

A practical structure for a country-and-region analysis

  • Country-level table: one row per country, with the country field retained as the key.
  • Region field: a separate analyst-defined label if countries need to be grouped for reporting.
  • Regional summary: an additional aggregation calculated from the country rows, not a substitute for them.
  • Method notes: record property, search type, date range, export method, and the region mapping used.
