There may be no Windows 11 Pro key to recover. If Windows is activated with a digital license, activation is tied to the device—and often your Microsoft account—instead of being represented by a 25-character code.
To see what your PC is using, open Start > Settings > System > Activation. This page shows the installed edition and activation status. If it says Windows is activated with a digital license, you usually do not need to find a product key.
First, check whether you have Windows 11 Pro
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Go to System > Activation.
- Check the Windows edition and activation message.
A Windows product key is a 25-character code in this format: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.
However, an activated Windows 11 installation does not necessarily have such a key that you can retrieve. Free upgrades and Windows 11 Pro upgrades purchased through the Microsoft Store commonly use a digital license instead.

Find the key according to how Windows was purchased

| New PC supplied with Windows 11 | Check the device packaging, the firmware-installed license, or a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) attached to the PC. |
| Refurbished PC | Ask the refurbisher. The key may be on the packaging, a COA, or a card supplied with the computer. |

Enter a Windows 11 Pro key you already have
If you have found a legitimate key, enter it from Windows:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Change product key.
- Enter the 25-character key.
- Follow the activation prompts.
The key must match the installed edition. A Windows 11 Home key cannot activate Windows 11 Pro. Likewise, an Enterprise key is not a replacement for a Pro key.
What to do if you do not have a key
If Windows is not activated and you do not have a valid Pro key, select Start > Settings > System > Activation > Go to Store. Microsoft Store will open so you can purchase a Windows 11 digital license.
After a new-device installation, Microsoft may show Open Store instead. The two labels refer to the Store purchase path in their respective activation scenarios.

If Go to Store is missing, the PC may be managed by an organization. Microsoft recommends contacting the organization’s support person rather than attempting to use an unrelated key.
Reinstall Windows 11 Pro without recovering the key
If the computer already has a digital license for Windows 11 Pro, you can reinstall the same edition without typing a key:
- Start Windows setup.
- When setup asks for a product key, choose I don’t have a product key.
- Install the same edition that was previously activated—Windows 11 Pro.
- Connect the PC to the internet after installation.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the digital license, if applicable.
- Check Settings > System > Activation.
Do not install Pro assuming a Home license will upgrade automatically. A Windows 11 Home digital license activates Home, not Pro. Installing Pro requires a separate Pro license or a valid Pro key.
Reactivate after replacing hardware
A major hardware change, particularly a motherboard replacement, can cause Windows to lose activation. If the digital license was linked to your Microsoft account, try the Activation troubleshooter:

- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- If Windows offers an option to reactivate after a hardware change, select it.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the digital license.
- Choose the affected device if Windows presents a device list.
The edition must remain the same before and after the hardware change: Home must stay Home, and Pro must stay Pro.
Activation errors that explain why a key is not working

Why common product-key recovery methods fail
“Every activated PC has a recoverable key” is false. Digital licenses do not necessarily expose a 25-character code.
Your Microsoft account will not always display the key. Microsoft retains product-key records for purchases made through the Microsoft online store. A digital license associated with your device and account is not necessarily shown as a product key.
Do not rely on random key-finder utilities. They may display a generic installation key, a firmware key for a different edition, or no useful key at all. Microsoft’s current consumer guidance points instead to purchase records, packaging, COA labels, retailer lockers, and digital-license activation.

A Home key cannot activate Pro. If Activation reports an edition mismatch, obtain a Pro license or reinstall the edition covered by your existing license.

Can I find my Windows 11 Pro key in Settings?
Settings can show the Windows edition and activation status at Start > Settings > System > Activation, but it does not necessarily display a 25-character key. If the page says Windows is activated with a digital license, there may be no key to retrieve.
Where is the Windows 11 Pro key on a new computer?
It may be embedded in the computer’s firmware, included in the packaging, or printed on a Certificate of Authenticity attached to the device. If it is a refurbished PC, the refurbisher must supply the license information.
Can I reinstall Windows 11 Pro without the product key?
Yes, if the device has a digital license for Windows 11 Pro. During setup, select I don’t have a product key, install the same edition, connect to the internet, and sign in with the associated Microsoft account if needed.

Can a Windows 11 Home key activate Windows 11 Pro?
No. Home and Pro licenses are different. You need a Windows 11 Pro key or Pro digital license to activate Pro.
What is the command to recover a Windows 11 product key?
Microsoft’s current consumer instructions do not provide a universal command for recovering a Windows 11 key. Depending on how Windows was purchased, check the confirmation email, retailer digital locker, Microsoft order history, device packaging, or COA.
Does a free Windows 11 upgrade provide a product key?
Usually not. Microsoft says a free upgrade normally provides a digital license instead of a retail-style Windows 11 product key.

Check Settings > System > Activation before trying to recover a key. If Windows 11 Pro is activated with a digital license, you do not need a 25-character code for normal reinstallation or reactivation. If you purchased a key, find it in the relevant email, retailer locker, Microsoft order record, box, COA, or refurbisher documentation. Use only a key that matches Windows 11 Pro; otherwise purchase a Pro digital license through Activation > Go to Store.
