To improve Pixel 5 battery life, start with display settings, Adaptive Battery and app battery use; to address sluggishness, restart the phone, check storage and test in safe mode before considering a reset. These steps can reduce avoidable drain or identify a problem app, but they cannot restore capacity lost as the battery ages. Google no longer provides Pixel 5 Android version or security updates, so expectations for this older phone should be realistic.
Which changes make the biggest difference to everyday battery life?
Start with the screen and apps: they are practical places to reduce routine power use without changing how the phone works at a basic level. Google recommends the following settings, but does not promise a specific runtime increase for any one change.
Reduce display activity
- Lower screen brightness and shorten the screen timeout.
- Turn on Dark theme and turn off live wallpapers if you do not need them.
- Turn off Always-on Display to avoid keeping information visible while the screen is idle.
- Pixel 5 supports Smooth Display up to 90 Hz. In Settings, turn Smooth Display off if battery runtime matters more to you than the extra screen smoothness.
These changes reduce display activity or features, so choose the trade-off that suits your use. Keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization enabled
Google’s current path for Adaptive Battery is Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > Adaptive Battery > Use Adaptive Battery. Leave it on. A newly set up or factory-reset phone may take a few weeks to learn usage patterns.

To find apps using power, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage and review the app list, paying attention to unusually high background use. Google recommends the “Optimized” battery setting for apps wherever that option is available. Restrict or uninstall an app only after identifying it as a likely source of drain; force-stopping essential services can interfere with normal functions. Google’s current advice is in its battery guidance and Fix battery drain problem.
Turn off connections and features you are not using
Switch off hotspot or tethering when no device needs the Pixel 5’s connection. The phone also supports Adaptive Connectivity, announced by Google as a feature that can switch between 5G and 4G depending on the app in use. Google noted that availability depends on carrier and app support. A weak or obstructed 5G signal can affect service; the Pixel 5 specifications describe this limitation.
For a longer interval between charges, use Battery Saver when reduced background activity is an acceptable trade-off. Do not expect ordinary Battery Saver use to match Google’s original “up to 48 hours” launch claim: that figure applied to Extreme Battery Saver with limited features, including 5G disabled, and was based on third-party testing in California in mid-2020 on pre-production hardware and software. Google cautioned that actual battery life could be lower. It is not a present-day estimate for a used Pixel 5. How can you preserve the battery’s health?
Avoid heat, especially while charging
Google warns that a battery drains much faster when the phone is hot, even when it is not being used, and that this kind of drain can damage the battery. Keep the Pixel 5 out of hot environments and avoid adding unnecessary heat while charging.
Use charging optimization without expecting an 80% limit
Adaptive Charging is supported on Pixel 4a and later, including Pixel 5. It learns charging habits and aims to finish charging shortly before you usually unplug. Google says learning takes about 14 days, and the feature may not activate if your charging routine varies. The 80% charging limit is for Pixel 6a and later, so it is not a Pixel 5 setting. Google also says you do not need to train a lithium-ion battery by regularly charging it from zero to full. Details are in Google’s battery guidance.
Know what charging hardware the Pixel 5 supports
Google lists an included USB-C adapter using USB-PD 2.0 and 18 W fast charging for the Pixel 5. If you need a replacement or spare, use a compatible 18 W USB-C PD charger. A different charger does not increase the battery’s capacity or reverse aging; many owners may still have the adapter supplied with the phone. How do you troubleshoot unexpected battery drain?
- Check which apps are using the battery. Go to Settings > Battery > Battery usage and look for unusually high use, particularly in the background. Confirm that app optimization is enabled where available before restricting an app.
- Allow time after an update. Google says extra drain for a few days after a software update can be normal while downloads and optimization finish. If it continues beyond that, keep investigating rather than assuming the battery needs replacement.
- Restart the phone and check for app updates. Also check Settings > System > Software update for any system update offered to your device. Google lists Pixel 5 as no longer receiving Android version or security updates, so do not expect a new major Android release or security update. - Use Google’s support route if unusual drain persists. Google’s Battery diagnostics page applies to Pixel 6 and later, not Pixel 5. Do not use that page as a Pixel 5 diagnostic step or conclude that the battery needs replacement without an appropriate diagnosis. Google’s Pixel 5-relevant guidance is Fix battery drain problem.
How do you diagnose a slow Pixel 5?
Check storage before removing apps or resetting
Open Settings > Storage and check how much space is available. Google warns that a Pixel can have problems when less than 10% of its storage is free. If storage is low, remove files or apps you no longer need, then see whether performance improves. The threshold is Google’s general troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee that freeing a particular amount will fix every slowdown.

Use safe mode to test downloaded apps
Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If the phone works normally there, a downloaded app is a more likely cause. Remove recently installed apps one at a time, testing the phone after each removal. If the slowdown remains in safe mode, a downloaded app is less likely to be responsible.

Reserve a factory reset for last
A factory reset deletes local data and apps, so it is not a safe first-line “speed up” trick. Try restarting, updating apps, checking storage and testing in safe mode first. If you eventually reset the phone, back up important data beforehand and follow Google’s reset guidance.
What should you realistically expect from a Pixel 5 battery?
Google’s original specifications list a 4,000 mAh minimum capacity and 4,080 mAh typical capacity. Those are specifications for the phone when new, not measurements of the remaining capacity in any individual used device. Google has not published a current independent Pixel 5 benchmark or a present-day battery-runtime figure in the cited material, so the original capacity and launch claims cannot predict how long a five-year-old handset will last on a charge.

Google’s update-support page currently lists Pixel 5 as no longer receiving Android version or security updates. That matters when deciding how long to keep relying on the phone: battery and performance settings can address avoidable drain or some software problems, but they do not extend the device’s update support.
