It returns the frame that initiated the request, or null when navigating to an error page, so check for null before using frame methods. To determine whether the request drives a navigation, check request.isNavigationRequest() separately.
Get the initiating frame from a request
Puppeteer page request events provide an HTTPRequest. Call its frame() method to retrieve the frame that initiated that request:

});The official HTTPRequest API reference describes the result as “The frame that initiated the request, or null if navigating to error pages.” Do not assume every request has a usable frame.
Distinguish a frame association from navigation
request.frame() answers which frame initiated the request. It does not tell you whether the request itself drives navigation. For that, call request.isNavigationRequest(). Use both when your handler needs the frame and needs to filter navigation requests.

Use a response when that is what your handler receives
An HTTPResponse also has a frame() method, with the same documented null case for error-page navigation. Call response.request() to get the request associated with that response and inspect its request metadata. See the HTTPResponse API reference.
Inspect the page’s frame tree instead
If you are not handling a particular request and want the page’s current frame structure, use the page and frame APIs:

page.mainFrame()returns the main frame.page.frames()lists the page’s attached frames.frame.childFrames()returns a frame’s child frames for nested-frame traversal.
These methods answer a different question from request.frame(): they inspect the page’s frame tree rather than identify the frame associated with one request. See the Page API reference and Frame API reference.
Account for frame and request lifecycle
Frames can attach, navigate, and detach. Puppeteer documents the frameattached, framenavigated, and framedetached lifecycle events. If you retain a frame and use it later, account for the possibility it has detached or changed state.

Request lifecycle events also have distinctions worth preserving. HTTP error responses such as 404 or 503 still complete the HTTP request lifecycle successfully and lead to requestfinished; a request that fails instead emits requestfailed. A redirect completes one request and creates a new request for the redirected URL. See the HTTPRequest API reference.
Wait safely when an action can navigate a frame
If clicking in a frame may trigger navigation, start waiting for navigation and perform the action together. This avoids starting the wait only after the navigation has already begun:

Troubleshoot common mistakes
frameis null: Puppeteer documents this for navigation to an error page. Do not callurl()or other frame methods on the null value, and do not silently substitutepage.mainFrame(); that would change the meaning from the request’s initiating frame to the page’s main frame.- You need only navigations: Check
request.isNavigationRequest(). A frame association alone is not a navigation filter. - Your code handles a response, not a request: Use
response.frame(), or callresponse.request()if you need the associated request. - A saved frame cannot be used later: Frames can detach. Check your event flow and avoid assuming a frame remains attached indefinitely.
- A request returned 404 or 503: An HTTP error response is not the same as a failed request event. Use the response and request lifecycle events appropriate to the condition you need to detect.
