If your cursor has disappeared on a Windows 11 laptop, first check whether it is only hard to see: press Ctrl if the pointer-location feature is enabled, or enlarge and recolor the pointer in Settings. If it will not move, troubleshoot the input device instead—check the touchpad or mouse connection, then use Windows’ keyboard controls to reach driver settings.

First check: is the pointer hidden or not moving?

Move a finger on the touchpad or move the mouse. If the pointer responds but blends into the screen, change its size or color at Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch. Windows also has a pointer-location option: open Additional mouse settings > Pointer Options, enable the option to show the pointer’s location when pressing Ctrl, and then press Ctrl to highlight it. Labels may vary slightly by Windows update or device configuration. See Microsoft’s mouse settings guidance and input accessibility options.

If the pointer does not move, identify what you are using: the built-in touchpad, a wired USB mouse, a wireless mouse with a USB receiver, or a Bluetooth mouse. Follow the relevant checks below rather than treating a connection or driver problem as a visibility setting.

If the laptop touchpad will not move the cursor

Use the keyboard to reach Windows settings

You can navigate without a pointer. Press Windows key + I to open Settings, use Tab and the arrow keys to move between controls, and press Enter or Space to select. If you have a USB or Bluetooth mouse available, connect it temporarily to make the steps easier.

Update or reinstall the touchpad driver

A missing or outdated driver is one possible cause of touchpad trouble; an update is not guaranteed to fix every fault. Microsoft recommends checking Windows Update first. If that does not help, use Device Manager. The touchpad may be listed under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install any relevant updates, then restart the laptop and test the touchpad.
  2. If the problem remains, open Device Manager. Press Windows key + X, then select Device Manager using the arrow keys and press Enter.
  3. Expand Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices in turn. Locate the touchpad device, open its context menu with Shift + F10, and choose the available driver update option. Follow the prompts.
  4. If updating does not help, return to the touchpad device’s context menu in Device Manager and choose Uninstall device. Restart the laptop so Windows can attempt to reinstall it, then test the touchpad.

The device name and menus can differ by laptop. If the touchpad still fails after updating or reinstalling its driver, contact the laptop manufacturer for model-specific support. Some laptops also have a function-key shortcut or physical touchpad switch; its location and operation vary, so check the manufacturer’s instructions rather than guessing. Microsoft’s touchpad troubleshooting guide covers driver steps and manufacturer support.

If an external mouse will not move the cursor

Wired USB mouse

  • Check that the mouse is connected securely. Unplug it and reconnect it.
  • Try a different USB port. If it is connected through a hub, connect it directly to the laptop to rule out the hub.
  • If the mouse still does not work, test it on another PC. If it fails there too, it may need replacement.

Wireless mouse with a USB receiver

  • Check the mouse’s power switch and battery. Replace or recharge the battery if needed.
  • Unplug the USB receiver, wait about 10 seconds, and reconnect it. Try another USB port and bypass any hub while troubleshooting.
  • If possible, test the mouse and receiver on another PC. A mouse may require its correct driver on the test computer, so failure there is not conclusive if that driver is missing.

Bluetooth mouse

Check that the mouse is powered and follow Windows’ Bluetooth troubleshooting if it is disconnected or will not pair. Microsoft’s mouse and keyboard troubleshooting guidance covers connection checks, Windows Update, and Device Manager driver updates.

Use a keyboard or touch-screen fallback

Move the pointer with Mouse Keys

Mouse Keys lets you control the pointer using the numeric keypad. Navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Mouse and turn on Mouse Keys. The keypad’s 7, 8, 9, 4, 6, 1, 2, and 3 keys move the pointer in different directions. This requires a numeric keypad; on some laptops, keypad functions are accessed through an Fn key. See Microsoft’s Mouse Keys instructions.

Show the virtual touchpad on a touch-screen device

If your laptop has a touch screen, Windows may offer an on-screen virtual touchpad. Right-click the taskbar, choose Taskbar settings, turn on Virtual Touchpad under System tray icons, then select its icon on the taskbar. Availability depends on the device and Windows interface. Microsoft documents the steps in its virtual touchpad guide.

When to try another mouse or contact support

A basic wired USB mouse can be a practical temporary way to navigate if the touchpad or current mouse is unusable. It will not repair a touchpad driver problem, and it will not help if the cursor is merely hard to see; use the visibility controls for that. If the touchpad remains unresponsive after its driver has been updated or reinstalled, ask the laptop manufacturer for help with your specific model.
