To get started, confirm that State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition is included with Game Pass for your account and region, install it, and play the in-game tutorial. Then focus on building a stable community before tackling the campaign’s larger threats. The tutorial covers combat, scavenging, character inventory, and blood plague, so it is the best first stop for new players.
Confirm Game Pass access and install the game

Sign in to the Xbox app or your local Xbox store with the account you plan to use. Find State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition and check whether the listing in your region includes Game Pass access. The official listing presents the game for Xbox and PC, but availability and entitlement can vary by region, account, and subscription; it does not establish a specific plan requirement or guaranteed access everywhere.

Install the game and launch it from the Xbox app or console. If a PC installation or download fails, Undead Labs recommends opening Microsoft Store Library, selecting Get Updates, and then trying the Xbox app or the game’s Microsoft Store product page. These are troubleshooting options, not steps every player needs.
What should you do first?
Choose your starting survivors and follow the tutorial
Choose a starting pair, then follow the orange exclamation-mark objectives. Undead Labs says the initial pair carries into the main game and recommends playing the tutorial on a first run. It introduces basic combat, scavenging, inventory, and blood plague guidance.

Look up missed guidance in the pause menu
If you miss an explanation or need a reminder, open the pause menu and select the How to Play tab. You can also review controls and accessibility settings. In single-player, the game can be paused; multiplayer does not provide the same pause option.
Choose a difficulty that suits your first run
State of Decay 2 offers Green, Standard, Dread, Nightmare, and Lethal difficulties. Its Action, Community, and Maps settings can be adjusted separately, so combat danger, community pressure, and map/scavenging conditions need not be treated as one all-or-nothing choice.

Undead Labs describes Green as the more relaxed option: enemies do less damage, combat stamina lasts longer, freak zombies are rarer, crafting and construction cost less, and rucksacks yield more resources. Green or Standard is a reasonable recommendation for a first run, depending on how much pressure you want; that is guidance based on the official descriptions, not a tested ranking.
Build a sustainable community before chasing campaign goals
The opening campaign asks you to keep survivors from being overwhelmed by threats such as zombies and starvation. Scavenge supplies and establish a workable base and community before rushing into larger objectives. Survivors have different skills and burdens, so choices about who joins and how the group is managed are part of the challenge, not just the combat.

The broad campaign sequence is to build up the community, choose a leader, and prepare to defeat the blood plague by eliminating plague hearts. The game has four leader types, but you do not need to hurry through that sequence: learn the systems and set your pace.
Controls, accessibility, and playing with friends
Adjust controls and accessibility
In Settings, go to Controls > Remap Controls to customize supported controls. On an Xbox controller, the right stick, View, and Menu buttons cannot be remapped. Check the accessibility options as well if the default settings are uncomfortable.

Decide whether to play solo or in co-op
Co-op is optional. The official support guidance says up to three other players can join a host, for up to four players total. Multiplayer must be enabled, and players need an Xbox account; the official game page describes cross-play. Unlike single-player, multiplayer cannot be paused, so coordinate with friends when you need to manage supplies or take a break.

You can ignore the extra modes during your first session. Heartland is a story-driven return to Trumbull Valley, while Daybreak has up to four players face waves of undead. Both are listed as part of Juggernaut Edition; neither is necessary to learn the main campaign.

Is the game still receiving content updates?
Undead Labs says State of Decay 2 received its final content update in October 2024. Its support pages remain useful for getting started and troubleshooting, but players should not expect new content updates based on that notice.
