The details vary between games: Elden Ring rewards managing stamina around dodges and guards, while Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice emphasizes timed deflections and posture.
Soulslike combat is a learnable loop, not one universal ruleset
“Soulslike” covers action games with different defensive timing, resource pressure, attack rhythms, and progression. Do not assume that a dodge, block, or parry works the same way in every game. Learn the rules of the game in front of you, then repeat this loop:
- Observe the enemy’s wind-up, reach, and recovery.
- Choose a defense suited to the attack and the game.
- Keep enough stamina or other relevant resource to respond.
- Attack during a genuine opening, then recover.
- Adjust based on what happened rather than repeating a failed sequence.

How to read an enemy before attacking
Watch the whole attack, not just its wind-up
Notice when an enemy begins an attack, how far it reaches, whether it changes direction, and when it can act again. A swing that looks finished may be followed by another strike, so wait until you can identify a safe response rather than reacting to the first pause.

Use lock-on when it improves tracking
Lock-on can help keep aim on a single opponent, but it is not always comfortable with several enemies or movement that pulls the camera in an unhelpful direction. Choose a defense that fits the attack and game
Dodge when movement and timing are the right answer
In Elden Ring, dodging can avoid damage during invulnerable frames, but the action commits your character for a time. Block when you can afford the stamina cost
A shield can stop or reduce an attack, but blocking consumes stamina. In Elden Ring, holding a shield also slows stamina recovery; if the bar runs out, you can be left vulnerable. Treat parrying and deflection as distinct skills
Parrying in Elden Ring is timing-specific and high-risk, so it is optional practice rather than a prerequisite for beginning. Sekiro offers a different combat model: timed deflections pressure an enemy’s posture, and breaking posture creates a deathblow opportunity. Manage stamina as a combat budget in Elden Ring
In Elden Ring, stamina is spent on attacks, blocks, sprinting, and rolls. Spending it all on offense or holding a shield up can leave too little for an emergency defense. Pause between actions when needed and leave room for the response you may have to make. This stamina advice is specific to Elden Ring; other games may use different resources or rules. Take a punish, then reset
After an enemy attack or combo, look for recovery: the interval when it cannot immediately attack again. Use that opening for a manageable strike or short sequence, then return to defense. A long panic combo can commit you to an attack just as the opponent recovers.

Bandai Namco describes openings as central to improving in Elden Ring: “Looking for opportunities to attack when your enemy has an opening is at the core getting better at the game.” The guide is referring to that game’s combat, but the practical lesson is clear: wait for a reliable opening instead of trading hits without a plan. Pick a starting style, not a supposedly perfect build
There is no single beginner build that fits every player or every game. In Elden Ring, PlayStation describes power-oriented builds as heavier and more resilient, speed-oriented builds as more evasive, and magic-oriented builds as able to attack at range. If you are choosing an Elden Ring character, Vigor governs health and Endurance affects stamina and equipment load. Prioritize survivability and a load that feels comfortable to move with, then choose a weapon or style you actually want to learn. First, make one adjustment at a time: observe longer, defend differently, spend less stamina, or shorten your punish. If the fight still feels out of reach, use the options the game provides. In Elden Ring, open-world exploration can let you pursue another route, gain levels or equipment, summon help, and return later. PlayStation also recommends retreating from a difficult encounter and coming back with more skill, levels, or equipment. Linear games may not provide the same freedom to leave a challenge.
