The details vary: some games attack automatically, others ask you to aim, and upgrade choices may arrive during a run or in a shop between waves.
What is a bullet heaven game?
Bullet heaven is one name for a group of games also called survivor-likes, auto-shooters, or wave shooters. Epic Games Store contributor Steven T. Wright describes them as games in which players survive intensifying waves of attackers in a closed arena. A common loop is to move through the arena, collect experience or other resources, and use choices during the run to build up for stronger enemies—but games do not all follow one fixed formula. Epic Games Store’s overview discusses the genre and examples including Vampire Survivors, Brotato, and 20 Minutes Till Dawn. Steam’s curator also uses “Survivors-genre games, aka Bullet Heaven, Auto Shooters, Auto Battlers” as a collection label; that is store-community terminology, not a formal genre standard. How should you move to survive?
Movement can help you avoid contact, influence where enemies gather, and collect experience or useful drops when it is safe to do so. In Vampire Survivors, a beginner guide recommends staying in motion and steering enemies so they remain within your weapons’ range. Treat that as advice for that game, not a rule that applies to every title. RogueWiki’s Vampire Survivors guide, last updated August 12, 2026, covers patch 1.15 from June 2026.
If your character attacks automatically, pay attention to where enemies are clustering and move so your weapons can reach them while you avoid getting surrounded. When a game requires manual aiming, coordinate your direction of travel with your target instead of assuming attacks will handle themselves. How do you choose upgrades and build a run?
Give your choices a purpose: look for upgrades that work together, then check the game’s own requirements before committing to a build recipe. In Vampire Survivors, weapons and passive items can combine into evolutions. RogueWiki’s beginner guide says an evolution requires a max-level weapon and its specific passive item, and recommends planning a small number of achievable evolutions rather than chasing every option. Other games may shape a build through level-up selections, traits, items, weapon slots, or a shop. In Brotato, for example, shopping happens between waves and a character can carry up to six weapons. There is no established universally best damage-versus-defense priority across the genre; let the game’s choices and your current run guide that decision.

What should you check before starting a new game?
Before following a build guide or settling into a strategy, check the game’s controls and progression rules. These differences change what “good movement” and “good upgrades” mean:
- Aiming: Find out whether attacks are automatic, manual, or switchable between modes.
- Upgrade timing: Check whether you choose upgrades when leveling up, open chests, shop between waves, or use another system.
- Run structure: Learn whether the run is organized around a timer, discrete waves, or both.
- Build limits: Look for weapon-slot caps, character-specific options, passive-item requirements, and evolution rules.
These distinctions are visible in the examples above: Vampire Survivors offers level-up and chest choices, while Brotato has a between-wave shop; 20 Minutes Till Dawn calls for manual aiming, while Brotato offers auto-fire by default and optional manual aiming. Is Brotato a useful game to try?
Brotato is a clear example of how a survivor-like can vary the usual loop. Nintendo’s listing for the Switch download version describes a top-down arena shooter roguelite with auto-firing weapons by default, optional manual aiming, up to six weapons, material collection for experience, and shop choices between short waves. Nintendo says its waves last 20 to 90 seconds and runs take under 30 minutes; those timings describe Brotato in that product listing, not the genre as a whole.
