Start with one browser test for a user journey that matters, run it automatically on a code change, and make its failure report easy to find. Use the language and test framework your project already supports; prepare the application and browser before the test starts, and wait for the application to be ready rather than relying on a fixed delay.
What CI adds to browser testing
Continuous integration runs automated build and test checks as code changes are integrated. A browser test exercises a real user-facing journey—such as submitting a form—and can fail the workflow if the expected result does not occur. The point of a first CI test is not broad coverage: it is a repeatable signal about one important behavior.
For a successful run, the job needs both the test framework and a usable browser and application environment. That means installing project dependencies and browser requirements, then ensuring the application is available before the test command runs.
Choose a framework that fits the project
There is no evidence-based universal winner among Playwright, Cypress, and Selenium. Choose based on the languages and tests your team already uses, desired browsers, CI runner, reporting needs, and whether execution on remote machines is important.

Build the first CI browser test
1. Pick one high-value journey
Choose a flow users depend on, such as signing in in a test environment or submitting a form. Assert an observable outcome, not just that a page loaded. Keep the test independent of production credentials; use the approved test environment and your team’s normal secret-handling practices.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
2. Make the application available
Decide whether the job will build and launch a local app or test an already deployed test environment. Cypress’s GitHub Action supports build and start commands; Playwright documents running tests against a deployment URL. In either case, confirm the target URL and test data are appropriate for automated runs.
3. Install dependencies and browser requirements
For a JavaScript project using Playwright on GitHub Actions, the documented core sequence is npm ci, npx playwright install --with-deps, then npx playwright test. Playwright’s CI guide also shows uploading the HTML report after the run. For Cypress, follow the action guide’s dependency setup and configure the action’s build/start inputs as needed.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
GitHub Actions is only one option. Cypress says its tests work with multiple CI providers, and Playwright says its tests can run on any CI provider. GitHub’s Actions quickstart covers the basic workflow model.
4. Wait for readiness, then run the test
A process starting is not proof that the web server is accepting requests. Cypress specifically warns that launching a server and immediately launching tests can race; use a readiness check instead of an arbitrary sleep. With its GitHub Action, configure start and wait-on when the action should start and check the app.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For Playwright, start with one CI worker unless your infrastructure is ready for parallel work. Its documentation recommends one worker to prioritize stability and reproducibility. Add parallelism or sharding only after the basic run is diagnosable and consistent.
5. Preserve useful results
Make failures visible where developers work. Playwright’s workflow example uploads an HTML report; Cypress documents CI results and debugging. Retain logs and relevant failure artifacts according to your team’s data policies, and make sure contributors know how to access them.

Common first-run failures and fixes
- Tests start before the app is listening: Replace a fixed delay or immediate launch with a readiness check. In the Cypress GitHub Action, configure
startandwait-on. - Browser or operating-system dependencies are missing: Check the framework’s CI setup instructions. Playwright’s documented command installs browsers with dependencies; Selenium setup also requires the relevant browser and driver.
- The test passes locally but not in CI: First make the run easier to reproduce: use the documented dependency installation, keep the app target and test data consistent, and start Playwright with one worker. Inspect CI logs and the retained report before increasing concurrency.
- A failure is hard to diagnose: Upload or retain the framework report and logs as workflow artifacts or through the team’s normal reporting system. Verify that the workflow exposes them after failed runs, not only successful ones.
- Browser versions differ between runs or environments: Consider the framework’s documented browser or container guidance. Cypress documents Docker images for constraining browser versions; Playwright documents browser installation and a Linux image. These are optional repeatability measures, not prerequisites for a first test.
Improve coverage without making the first workflow brittle
Once the initial journey runs reliably, add tests for other important flows. Then decide whether you need additional browser or operating-system combinations, caching, parallelism, or remote execution. Selenium Grid is an option when WebDriver scripts need remote browser instances across machines or platforms. Broader matrices and distributed execution add setup and diagnosis work, so tie each expansion to a specific coverage need.

ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for end-to-end browser tests: it captures a page rather than verifying your application’s interactive journey. If you need a screenshot in a workflow, one GET request can return an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides tools for AI agents, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
