To get rid of Yahoo on Google Chrome, change the address-bar search engine in Chrome Settings. If Yahoo keeps returning, check whether it is set as the startup page or homepage, then inspect unfamiliar extensions and installed programs; reset Chrome if the unwanted change persists.
These steps are mainly for Chrome on a computer. Search-engine choices and some controls may vary by country or platform. A Yahoo redirect is a reason to investigate, but does not by itself prove a particular malware infection.
1. Change Chrome’s address-bar search engine
This changes the search provider Chrome uses when you type a query in the address bar.
- Open Chrome.
- Select More in the upper-right corner, then choose Settings.
- Select Search engine.
- Choose your preferred option for searches from the address bar.
The available search-engine choices may vary by country.

2. Check Chrome’s startup page and homepage
The startup page is what Chrome opens when you launch the browser. The homepage is what opens when you select the Home button. They are separate settings, so check the one that matches what you see.
If Yahoo opens when Chrome starts
- Select More → Settings.
- Open On startup.
- Choose Open the New Tab page, or select Open a specific page or set of pages and remove or change the Yahoo entry.
If Yahoo opens when you select the Home button
- Open More → Settings.
- Under Appearance, review the homepage setting for the Home button.
- Choose the New Tab page or enter a different page address.
3. Inspect extensions and installed programs
If Chrome’s search engine or homepage changes without your permission, unfamiliar extensions return, or Chrome redirects to unfamiliar pages, investigate extensions and installed programs. These symptoms can indicate unwanted software, but do not identify a specific cause by themselves.

- In Chrome, open More → Extensions → Manage extensions.
- Review installed extensions and remove ones you do not recognize or trust.
- On Windows, open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and review unfamiliar or unwanted programs.
- On Mac, open Finder → Applications and remove unwanted apps.
Be cautious when removing programs. Afterward, turn on only extensions you trust and check Chrome’s search and startup settings again.
4. Reset Chrome if the unwanted change persists
If an app or extension changed Chrome settings and the unwanted behavior continues, use Chrome’s reset option:

- Open Chrome Settings.
- Select Reset settings.
- Choose Restore settings to their original defaults.
- Confirm by selecting Reset settings.
A reset changes Chrome’s default search engine, homepage and tabs, new-tab page, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. Google says saved bookmarks and passwords are not deleted or changed. Some extensions may need to be turned on again afterward; enable only ones you trust.
5. If Yahoo keeps coming back
The cited guidance does not establish a universal cause for a persistent redirect. If the steps above do not resolve it, use the Chrome Help Forum or qualified device support. Avoid blindly deleting system policies or registry entries.

Why do my Chrome searches keep going to Yahoo?
Yahoo may be selected as Chrome’s address-bar search engine. If the setting changes without your permission or Yahoo returns after you change it, inspect unfamiliar extensions and installed programs.
Why does Chrome open Yahoo when I start it?

Will resetting Chrome delete my bookmarks and passwords?
No. Google says Chrome’s reset does not delete or change saved bookmarks and passwords. It does reset other settings and affects cookies and site data, extensions, and themes.
Is a Yahoo redirect proof that my computer has malware?
No. A redirect or search setting that changes without permission can be a sign of unwanted software, but the symptom alone does not prove a particular infection. Check extensions and installed programs, and seek qualified support if the issue continues.
