To remove an orange tint from a Windows laptop, first turn off Night light, then check Color filters. If the tint remains, check HDR and power behavior, and investigate the display driver when its settings are unavailable or the problem began after an update. If those steps do not help, compare the built-in screen with an external display before seeking model-specific repair advice. An orange cast alone does not prove the screen is damaged.
1. Turn off Night light
Night light intentionally warms screen colors. Microsoft notes that on HDR-capable devices it can give the display a red tint. To test whether it is responsible, turn it off temporarily:
- Open Settings > System > Display > Night light.
- Turn Night light off and check whether the screen looks normal.
- If the tint disappears, adjust the Strength slider or disable the schedule if you do not want Night light to turn on automatically.
You can also use the Night light quick setting from the taskbar. Labels may vary slightly between Windows versions. Microsoft describes the HDR-related behavior this way: “When night light is turned on, the coloring on your display might have a red tint and content might not be readable on it.” Microsoft’s HDR settings guidance does not mean Night light explains every orange-looking screen.
2. Check Windows Color filters
Color filters alter the display’s color palette, so an enabled filter can make the screen look unexpectedly tinted. Temporarily switch the feature off to test:

- If the colors return to normal, check which filter was selected and whether you want it enabled.
The settings path can differ in older Windows releases. See Microsoft’s instructions for Color filters.
3. Check HDR and power state
If your laptop has an HDR-capable display, note whether the color changes when you connect or disconnect the charger, or after restarting. Open Settings > System > Display > HDR to review the HDR setting.

Microsoft says default power settings on HDR-capable laptops turn HDR off when the device is on battery, which can leave colors under-saturated after a restart. Night light can also cause the red tint described above on HDR devices. These are specific documented behaviors, not proof that HDR is causing every orange cast. Review Microsoft’s HDR and power guidance before changing settings.
4. Update or roll back the display driver when appropriate
A grayed-out Night light control can indicate a display-driver problem. A driver change is also worth investigating if the orange tint began immediately after an update. Microsoft’s guidance recommends updating a driver, or rolling it back when symptoms started after an update.

- Check for display-driver updates through Settings > Windows Update.
- If no suitable update appears, visit the laptop manufacturer’s official support page and look up drivers for your exact model.
- If the issue started after a driver update, use Windows’ driver rollback option where available, or follow the manufacturer’s support instructions.
Avoid driver downloads from unverified sites. See Microsoft’s display troubleshooting guidance for driver update and rollback advice, and Microsoft’s Night light troubleshooting guidance for a grayed-out control.
5. Compare the laptop with an external display
If the tint persists after the settings and driver checks, connect a known-working monitor or television if one is available and compare the colors. Microsoft’s general display troubleshooting advice also suggests trying another monitor or cable to help rule out hardware. This is an isolation check, not a definitive diagnosis: a graphics or configuration issue can affect more than one display.

Also observe whether the tint appears on the manufacturer’s startup screen or in firmware setup, before Windows loads. The cited guidance does not establish an orange-tint-specific rule for interpreting that observation, so treat it as useful context rather than proof of a particular fault.

As you troubleshoot, note three comparisons: whether the cast affects only the built-in panel or also an external display; whether it appears only after Windows loads or is visible earlier; and whether it changes with Night light, Color filters, HDR, or power state. These observations can narrow what to check next, but they do not by themselves identify a failed component.
