Use a Silk Touch tool to collect packed ice or blue ice directly; without Silk Touch, mining either block drops nothing. The main place to find both is an iceberg in a frozen ocean, with blue ice most often found near the iceberg’s base or underwater. You can also craft packed ice from regular ice, then craft blue ice from packed ice.
What you need to collect either block
- A Silk Touch tool: The block references report that packed ice and blue ice do not drop themselves when mined without Silk Touch. A pickaxe is the quick mining choice. See the packed ice and blue ice references for block details.
- A route to a cold biome: Icebergs generate in frozen oceans and deep frozen oceans. Their composition can include packed ice, blue ice, and snow. See the iceberg reference.
Exact generation locations and trade availability can vary by edition or release. The detailed block behavior cited here comes from community-edited references, so check your game version if a particular structure or mechanic is essential to your plan.
How to find and mine packed ice
Search an iceberg first
Look for icebergs in frozen ocean biomes. Packed ice is part of their reported composition. Other reported generation locations include ice spikes, frozen peaks, village structures, and ancient cities; the block reference does not establish that every location is available in every edition or version.
Mine it with Silk Touch
Break packed ice with a Silk Touch pickaxe or another Silk Touch tool. Without the enchantment, it drops nothing. Unlike regular ice, packed ice does not turn into water when broken, which makes it a useful source block to carry and craft with.

Craft it from regular ice
If you can gather regular ice with Silk Touch, crafting offers an alternative to locating packed ice deposits. The packed-ice crafting recipe uses regular ice; consult the recipe in your edition’s crafting interface if you need the exact grid arrangement.
How to find and mine blue ice
Check the lower and underwater parts of icebergs
Blue ice can generate in frozen-ocean iceberg features alongside packed ice. Search around the lower portions of an iceberg, including at or below the waterline, rather than checking only its exposed top.

| Mine packed ice from an iceberg | A few blocks when you have found a frozen ocean | Travel to an iceberg and a Silk Touch tool |
| Mine blue ice from an iceberg | A few blue ice blocks without crafting a large amount | Search the lower or underwater iceberg areas and use Silk Touch |
| Craft from regular ice | A repeatable supply when you can harvest regular ice | Silk Touch to collect regular ice; 81 regular ice per blue ice block through the crafting chain |
| Buy from a wandering trader | A convenient opportunity if the offer appears | Emeralds and a trader offering the block; availability is not assured |
For a small amount, direct mining or a trader’s offer may save effort. If you need repeated quantities and can harvest regular ice, crafting is an alternative; it is not a measured speed or efficiency advantage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a wandering trader sell packed ice or blue ice?
The block references report that wandering traders may sell packed ice or blue ice for emeralds. Treat either trade as a chance encounter rather than a reliable supply: the offer is not guaranteed. Trade details should be verified against the specific edition and version you play.
