Use page.evaluate() when you need property values back in Node.js; use page.evaluateHandle() with getProperty() or getProperties() when you need to keep working with an object that lives in the page. The difference is whether you need a serialized data result or a live page-side reference.
Choose the right Puppeteer API
| What you need | API | What you receive |
|---|---|---|
| Read a few values and use them in Node.js | page.evaluate() |
A serialized and reconstructed value |
| Keep a reference to an object in the page | page.evaluateHandle() |
A JSHandle, or an ElementHandle if the result is an element |
| Read one property from an existing handle | handle.getProperty(name) |
A handle for that property |
| Enumerate properties represented by a handle | handle.getProperties() |
A Map<string, JSHandle> |
| Find heap objects that share a prototype | page.queryObjects(prototypeHandle) |
A handle to an array of matching objects |
For ordinary data extraction, start with evaluate(). Handle-based access adds a resource lifecycle to manage and is useful when you need the original page-side reference, such as for further inspection or a DOM element.
Read selected property values with page.evaluate()
Run the property reads in the browser context, then return a plain object, array, or primitive containing only the data Node.js needs:
const data = await page.evaluate(() => {
const item = window.somePageObject;
return {
title: item.title,
count: item.count,
};
});
console.log(data.title, data.count);
evaluate() executes its callback in the page and returns the result to Node.js. If the callback returns a promise, Puppeteer waits for it. A function callback is generally easier to debug than a string callback.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Pass Node.js values as arguments
The callback is serialized and evaluated in the page. It cannot access Node.js lexical variables or call Node-side helper functions through a closure. Pass values as arguments instead:
const propertyName = 'title';
const value = await page.evaluate((name) => {
return window.somePageObject[name];
}, propertyName);
Keep any browser-side helper logic inside the callback, or pass the inputs it needs as arguments.
Understand serialization
The object returned by evaluate() is serialized and reconstructed for Node.js; it is not a live reference to the original object. This is a good fit for data, but a DOM node returned this way will not become a usable Node-side DOM object and may appear as an empty-looking object. Use handle-based evaluation for an element or another object you need to keep referencing in the page.

Get a property from an object handle
Use evaluateHandle() to retain an in-page object reference, then getProperty() to obtain a handle for one property. Convert the property handle to a Node.js value with jsonValue() when that is what you need:

const titleHandle = await objectHandle.getProperty('title');
try {
const title = await titleHandle.jsonValue();
console.log(title);
} finally {
await titleHandle.dispose();
await objectHandle.dispose();
}
getProperty() fetches one property from the referenced object and returns a handle, not the ordinary property value. If you need only a data value and do not need to preserve the object reference, reading it inside evaluate() is simpler.
Enumerate properties represented by a handle
getProperties() returns a map of handles representing the properties of the current handle. Convert the property handles you need; do not treat the map as a plain object of values.

const objectHandle = await page.evaluateHandle(() => window.somePageObject);
const properties = await objectHandle.getProperties();
try {
const result = {};
for (const [name, propertyHandle] of properties) {
result[name] = await propertyHandle.jsonValue();
}
console.log(result);
} finally {
for (const propertyHandle of properties.values()) {
await propertyHandle.dispose();
}
await objectHandle.dispose();
}
This enumerates the properties represented in the returned map. The API description does not establish that the map is a complete reflection of every JavaScript property category, so do not assume it includes every property in all senses of JavaScript property reflection. If you only need specific values, reading those explicitly in evaluate() avoids converting handles you do not need.
Work with DOM elements
A DOM element should remain a handle if you need to interact with it from Node.js. With handle-based evaluation, a returned element may be represented as an ElementHandle rather than a generic JSHandle. For example, to inspect a particular property:
const elementHandle = await page.evaluateHandle(() =>
document.querySelector('h1')
);
const textHandle = await elementHandle.getProperty('textContent');
try {
console.log(await textHandle.jsonValue());
} finally {
await textHandle.dispose();
await elementHandle.dispose();
}
If you only want a string such as the heading text, return that string directly from evaluate() instead. Avoid returning a DOM node through ordinary evaluation and expecting it to behave like a live DOM object in Node.js.

Dispose handles when finished
A JSHandle keeps its referenced page object from being garbage-collected. Dispose handles when your code no longer needs them, including property handles created during enumeration. Puppeteer also automatically disposes handles when their frame navigates away or their parent execution context is destroyed, but explicit disposal makes the intended lifecycle clear and avoids retaining references unnecessarily.
Use queryObjects() only for prototype-based heap inspection
page.queryObjects(prototypeHandle) is a specialized inspection method: it finds objects with a specified prototype and returns a handle to an array. It is not needed to read a property from an object you already know how to reach. Use getProperty() or getProperties() for that task.
Troubleshooting common problems
- The result is empty-looking or does not act like a DOM element: ordinary
evaluate()results are serialized. Return the specific data you need, or useevaluateHandle()for a page-side object or element reference. - A Node.js variable is undefined inside the callback: page callbacks cannot close over Node-side variables. Pass the value as an argument to
evaluate()orevaluateHandle(). - You received a handle instead of a value: call
jsonValue()on the property handle when you need a serializable value. If you do not need an object reference, read and return the property insideevaluate(). - Enumeration produces handles rather than values: that is the result shape of
getProperties(). Iterate over the returned map and convert only the handles you need. - Handles remain in use longer than expected: dispose property handles and their parent handle once finished. Navigation or context destruction also disposes them automatically.
- A property read fails because the page object is not ready: ensure the page has reached the state where that object exists before evaluating the callback. For asynchronous page-side work, return a promise from the callback; Puppeteer waits for it.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a screenshot rather than reading JavaScript object properties, ScreenshotNeo takes a website URL in one API request and returns an image or PDF, without requiring you to set up Puppeteer locally.
