To make a cordless work light last longer on one charge, lower its brightness or use its dim mode if the work area remains adequately lit. If the light supports different battery capacities, a larger compatible battery may extend runtime. Check the exact model’s official runtime figures and battery compatibility: runtime varies by light, setting, and battery.
Lower the brightness when the task allows
Start with the light’s lower setting or dim function, if available. Use it only when it still illuminates the work area sufficiently. A dim mode can extend runtime, but the amount depends on the model.
For example, Bosch says the FL12’s dim function doubles runtime. That is a manufacturer claim for the FL12, not a general rule for other work lights. See Bosch’s FL12 product information.
Check whether a higher-capacity compatible battery is supported
Some lights can use batteries of different capacities within their compatible platform. Bosch lists six hours of runtime for the FL12 with a 12V 2.0 Ah battery and 12 hours with a 4.0 Ah battery. Those are product-specific manufacturer figures; do not assume another light will double its runtime with a battery of twice the capacity.

Before buying or swapping batteries, verify compatibility in the light’s manual or official product materials. Battery systems differ by manufacturer and platform, and a battery that fits one tool is not automatically suitable for another.
Read runtime claims with their conditions
A runtime figure is useful only alongside the model, battery, and brightness setting named in the claim. These manufacturer examples illustrate why those details matter; they are not standardized, head-to-head test results.

These figures come from manufacturer product pages, which do not state a publication year. They should be treated as model-specific claims, not independent measurements or a cross-brand performance ranking.
Direct the light at the task
Position the light so its beam covers the work area you need. Pivoting heads and adjustable output can help direct illumination, but the cited product information does not establish that repositioning itself reduces battery use. Treat positioning as a way to improve where the light falls, not as a proven runtime-saving technique.

Use a spare battery for longer work sessions
If you have a second charged battery that the light officially supports, swapping batteries can extend a work session beyond the time one battery lasts. The amount of additional runtime depends on the light, battery, and selected setting; check the model’s own runtime information rather than assuming a universal gain.

- Check which brightness modes it offers and whether a dim function is available.
- Confirm the compatible battery platform and capacities in the manual or official product page.
- Read the runtime claim for its named battery, brightness setting, and any footnotes.
