To watch local broadcast stations on a Vizio Smart TV, connect an antenna to the TV’s antenna input, set the tuner to Antenna if that option appears, and scan for channels. For a different option, WatchFree+ carries selected local-news streams over the internet; those feeds are not a complete replacement for the broadcast lineup in your area.
Choose between antenna channels and WatchFree+ local streams
“Local channels” can mean over-the-air (OTA) broadcast stations, such as network affiliates, or local-market news streams. They reach your TV in different ways:

The two options can complement each other. Vizio says antenna channels appear in the WatchFree+ guide’s Antenna Channels category, alongside streaming channels; the guide brings them together, but their sources remain different. Vizio’s antenna-channel guide explains the current navigation.
Connect an antenna and scan for OTA channels
- Connect the antenna. Attach its coaxial cable to the TV’s antenna input. A channel scan is required for OTA channels; internet access alone does not find broadcast signals.
- Select Antenna as the source, if your TV has that control. On the D24he1, Vizio’s manual gives the path Menu > Channels > Channel Source > Antenna. Exit the menu after selecting it. Other models may use different labels or not expose the same setting.
- Run the scan. On the D24he1, choose Find Channels, let the automatic scan finish, then choose Done and exit. The completed scan stores the channels found by the TV.
- Open the antenna lineup. On Vizio’s newer navigation, open WatchFree+, press OK to open the guide, then hold OK for three seconds to see categories including Antenna Channels. Choose that category to find the channels the TV has scanned.
- Optionally mark favorites. Vizio’s guide instructions say to move left until a channel is highlighted and press OK to favorite it.
The detailed scan labels above are from the Vizio D24he1 user manual, while the WatchFree+ guide directions come from Vizio’s current interface guidance. If your menus differ or a control is missing, check the manual for your exact model number or contact Vizio Support.

Improve reception if channels are missing or weak
A scan can only find signals that reach the antenna where it is installed. If reception is poor, try the following sequence:
- Check that the coaxial cable is secure and plugged into the TV’s antenna input.
- If your model offers a tuner source setting, confirm it is set to Antenna, not Cable.
- Try the antenna near a window without a metal screen, higher on a wall, or in another position. For a directional antenna, point it toward the broadcast tower.
- Scan again after moving the antenna so the TV can search from its new position.
- Use the FCC DTV reception map to check nearby signals and tower directions. Treat the results as planning guidance, not a guarantee of indoor reception at your home.
- If important stations remain weak, consider whether an indoor antenna suits your reception conditions or whether a directional or outdoor antenna may be more appropriate. Vizio notes outdoor antennas can be useful for longer-range reception and rural locations, but no antenna type guarantees reception at a particular home.
Watch local news through WatchFree+
To look for streaming local news, open WatchFree+ and browse the Local Channels category in its guide. Select a channel to watch its feed. Vizio’s WatchFree+ announcement describes local-market additions and this access path; its live-channel catalog lists local news outlets.

Availability depends on what is listed in the catalog, which can change. A local-news stream is a selected internet feed, not necessarily the same programming as the full OTA station schedule, and it does not provide every local station or affiliate. Vizio’s pages also advertise different service-wide channel totals: its antenna-channel help page says “260+,” while its WatchFree+ Live page says “300+.” Those volatile promotional counts are not the number of broadcast stations available at your home.
