You can get Google keyword and ranking data for a website you manage from Google Search Console. For keyword ideas and estimated search activity, use Google Ads Keyword Planner. Those tools answer different questions; neither requires scraping Google’s public results. In fact, Google says automated queries that scrape results for rank-checking without express permission violate its spam policies and Terms of Service. This guide shows how to use the official data sources, export results, and interpret their limits.
First, decide what “keyword data and rankings” means
There are three different tasks often described as scraping Google SEO data. Choose the source that matches your question:

Google’s Spam Policies for Google Web Search says automated queries to Google, including scraping results for rank-checking without express permission, violate its spam policies and Terms of Service. This is a statement about automated access to Google Search, not a blanket claim about scraping every public website. For a site you are authorized to manage, Search Console is the appropriate first stop.
Export your site’s Google Search keyword data
Use the Search Console interface for a quick export
- Open Google Search Console and select the verified property you want to analyze.
- Open the Performance report for Search results. Select the search type and date range relevant to your question.
- Review the Queries, Pages, Countries, and Devices breakdowns. Add filters where you need a narrower view, such as a particular page or country.
- Use the report’s export option to download the displayed data. Treat the export as a report with coverage limits, not a full log of every search.
The report is useful when you need a quick view or a manual export. If you need repeatable data collection, custom dimensions, or a regular reporting workflow, use the Search Analytics API.

Query the Search Analytics API with Python
The API exposes performance data from the Search Console Performance report through searchanalytics.query(). Before running a detailed query, first check which dates have data. Google’s guide recommends requesting the date dimension alone, without other parameters, then adding dimensions and filters as needed. The following example uses Google’s Python API client and Application Default Credentials; authorize an account that can access the Search Console property before running it.

)Install the Google API Python client and configure credentials with access to the Search Console API before running the script. Replace the property identifier with the exact property you manage. The code uses a 28-day example window ending three days before the current date to avoid assuming that the most recent dates have settled; adjust the range for your reporting needs. The API reference documents supported request fields and behavior: Search Analytics: query.
Add useful dimensions and filters
Change dimensions to group results differently. For example, ["query", "page"] reports query and page combinations, while adding country or device segments results further. Filters let you focus on particular query, page, country, or device values; consult the API reference for supported filter operators and request fields. More dimensions can make reports larger and consume more API load, so start with the minimum dimensions needed to answer your question.

Each returned row can include clicks, impressions, CTR, and position. Position is Search Console’s average-position metric for the selected aggregation and dimensions. It is not a promise that every searcher sees your page at that numbered slot: results can vary by search, context, and the aggregation used in the report.

The API supports rowLimit and startRow for retrieving batches. Google’s guide describes batches of up to 25,000 rows. You can request successive batches by increasing startRow, but pagination does not reveal rows excluded by privacy handling or recover data beyond Search Console’s system limits. Google’s current Help text states a limit of 50,000 rows per day, per property, per search type. A query broken down by both page and query can be especially expensive in API load.

Use Keyword Planner for keyword ideas and search estimates
Find ideas in Google Ads Keyword Planner
Keyword Planner is for campaign research. It can discover ideas from keyword phrases, a website, or both; it can also take an existing keyword set and show search-volume information and forecasts. Google says basic access requires completing account setup with billing information. Very low-volume or sensitive terms may not be discoverable or forecastable. Follow Google’s current Keyword Planner instructions to access the tool and choose the discovery or volume-and-forecast workflow.
Use the estimates to compare candidate terms and plan advertising, not as a census of organic Google searches. Targeting, account conditions, seasonality, budget, bid strategy, and other campaign factors affect forecasts. A Planner estimate does not tell you the actual position of a particular URL in organic results.

The Google Ads API’s Keyword Planning services can generate keyword ideas, historical metrics, and forecasts. Historical metrics include average monthly searches over the past 12 months, approximate monthly search volume by month, competition level or index, and bid ranges. Requests can specify location and language. Access to the Ads API requires its own account and API setup; it is separate from Search Console authorization.

Google notes that historical statistics refresh monthly and may not change for hours or days, so cache results rather than repeatedly requesting identical data. Forecasts are campaign-oriented estimates, not guarantees. See Google’s Keyword Planning overview and Generate Historical Metrics.

Search Console does not show every query
Google omits some anonymized queries from tables to protect user privacy. They can still contribute to chart totals unless a query filter is applied, so adding up visible query rows may not equal the chart’s total. Google documented a 1,000-row UI export ceiling and a 50,000-row daily API/Looker Studio ceiling per site and search type in its 2022 explanation; its current Help text states the 50,000-row daily limit. These are coverage constraints, not a reason to interpret an export as a complete search log. API quotas and report cost
Google’s Search Console API usage-limits page, last updated August 28, 2025, lists Search Analytics QPS quotas of 1,200 queries per minute per site and per user, 40,000 per minute per project, and 30,000,000 per day per project. It also describes separate short-term and long-term load quotas. Those listed request quotas do not mean every complex query is equally cheap: grouping or filtering on both page and query is particularly load-intensive, and broader date ranges use more load. Compare like with like
Search Console clicks and Google Analytics sessions are different measurements. Search Console measures activity before a person reaches your site from Google Search; Analytics measures on-site interactions. Their totals will not necessarily match. When comparing them, align date range, country, device, and landing-page scope, then account for the fact that clicks and sessions measure different events. Choose the right method for your reporting need
- For a site you manage: Start with Search Console’s Performance report, then use its API for repeatable query, page, country, or device analysis.
- For campaign keyword discovery: Use Keyword Planner or the Google Ads API, and label volumes and forecasts as estimates.
- For a URL’s actual search visibility: Use Search Console’s scoped average-position reporting for your property rather than presenting a scraped result as a universal rank.
- For automated Google result scraping: Do not treat it as a policy-neutral shortcut; Google’s policy addresses rank-checking scrapes conducted without express permission.
